Advertisement Posted June 2, 2011 Posted June 2, 2011 Hi cbretteville, Take a look here Anyone received Mr Puts new Compendium yet?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Ronazle Posted June 2, 2011 Share #182 Posted June 2, 2011 The Compendium arrived by TNT and USPS Priority mail today in North Texas. Packing was not totally adequate (the four pointed cover corners were lightly crushed). The content is awesome; again Mr P deserves endless applause and praise. regards, ron
Rick in CO Posted June 3, 2011 Share #183 Posted June 3, 2011 Just got mine today (Colorado). Was mailed 16 May, so 2 weeks-ish is not slow from Europe (based on my previous experience). Looks like a lot of history & technical info and will take some time to digest. This will undoubtedly become the best objective treatise on the subject and should serve as the basis for any subjective interpretations that the leicaphile might envision. Robert Hooper Posted June 3, 2011 Share #184 Posted June 3, 2011 I received my copy yesterday. Overall, I am very impressed, but was disappointed to discover that there is no index. Also, an appendix with camera and lens serial numbers along with corresponding production dates would have been a nice addition. On the positive side, Mr. Puts signed my copy with a short personal message which makes this book quite special to me. Thank you Mr. Puts for a colossal achievement. jamesk8752 Posted June 4, 2011 Share #186 Posted June 4, 2011 Received my copy in Birmingham, MI, on Tuesday, June 1. It was well-packed and arrived in perfect condition. What a treasure trove of lens information! My only cavil with it is that some of the more esoteric camera bodies are not discussed, but of course I have other books for that... jamesk8752 Posted June 6, 2011 Share #189 Posted June 6, 2011 Received mine today. It's thicker and heavier than I expected. A quick perusal revealed many typos - probably didn't use spell check enough. I agree about the high number of typos, and question whether a spell checker was used at all... I wonder if Mr. Puts is accepting info about these typos for possible incorporation into a future printing (if any)? Regards, Jim

Robert Hooper Posted June 7, 2011 Share #192 Posted June 7, 2011 I'm not convinced there will be a second printing available of the Leica Compendium in August 2011, so very soon after the first edition has been published and distributed. Given Mr. Puts description of the enormous effort of writing, printing, packaging and shipping the first edition, I can see him wanting to take a break from the ordeal. I do wish he would print more Leica Pocket Guides, as I would very much like to have one.
bill Posted June 7, 2011 Share #193 Posted June 7, 2011 I suspect Mr Puts has used the first edition to gauge the size of the market and to have his magnum opus proofread for him by a group of knowledgable people who have paid for the privilege. I expect to see a much larger print run second edition quite soon. Regards, Bill
George Furst Posted June 7, 2011 Share #194 Posted June 7, 2011 I received the above here in Daejeon, South Korea on the 27th of May. I brought it to a visit of my Leica Club friends (leicacub.net) on the West Coast of Korea. They were very impressed with the book but were angry that I did not tell them about it so they could have ordered it in time. I will tell them about the next edition. One friend even offered his recently purchased 35mm Summilux Aspheric in trade for the book. Of course they did not note any of the typos (related to English) but they were impressed with the figures and having so many lenses listed and the extensive use of color. I teach design at the MIT of Korea (Korea Advanced Institute of Sience and Engineering) so I really enjoyed the discussions about the changes in camera design and lens design. I thought that Erwin did an excellent job in providing backgrounnd information on the trials and tribulations of the company. Much of the early history of the company is new to me and expecially interesting. In summary, I love the book!!:

veraikon Posted June 7, 2011 Share #196 Posted June 7, 2011 I'm not convinced there will be a second printing available of the Leica Compendium in August 2011, so very soon after the first edition has been published and distributed. Given Mr. Puts description of the enormous effort of writing, printing, packaging and shipping the first edition, I can see him wanting to take a break from the ordeal. I´am convinced . The main distributors Lindemann and LFi are announcing it, and you can put your orders there. Lindemann is not only a bookseller at the lovley town* of Stuttgart, but also an editor, who is speciallized in photografic Literature. IMHO he has cooperated formerly with Erwin P. I´m not so convinced if this second printing (sounds for me more reasonable than edition) will be much improved. I think some typos and lost images will be replaced, not more. . UliWer Posted June 7, 2011 Share #198 Posted June 7, 2011 ...I do wish he would print more Leica Pocket Guides, as I would very much like to have one. +1. The lens reports in the Compendium are more or less abridged or slightly altered version of the Pocket book - with some exceptions like the new Noctilux, which is dealt with at large. The descriptions of camera models are much, much less precise in the Compendium where you find only some scattered overviews. The few remarks about screw mount models in the Compendium are just ... (I avoid the remark for I don't want to be banned from the forum at the moment). Photos about cameras and lenses in the Compendium are generally worse (taken from Leica leaflets), or completely missing, whilst those in the pocket book give you a precise idea. Of course there are long chapters in the Compendium about the different production methods for different models, which I find some of the most valuable parts of the book, even if they are very repetetive. The big advantage of the pocket book is it's small size - really for the pocket, and that you find everything where you exspect it. In the Compendium you have to search long. Though I don't see a chance for a new edition of the pocket book, as Mr. Puts wasn't alone to publish it. Laney was an important co-author and doesn't seem to be active in this field anymore. luigi bertolotti Posted June 7, 2011 Share #199 Posted June 7, 2011 I'm curious... will those who have bought this book be "upgrading" to the second edition? Regards, Bill Why ? I think it's simply a reprint... I don't think Puts made additional content, probably neither re-editing...
ho_co Posted June 7, 2011 Share #200 Posted June 7, 2011 Just a guess, but I bet he's busy these days preparing an entry for the new lenses we expect to see this month. It was quite an achievement, I think, to bring out a book that is up to date and comprehensive (as the Compendium is at the moment); and I'd guess that he would want to keep it so for a second printing if possible. But I'm delighted to have mine and am not planning to get the next edition.
