Lens profiles for Leica lenses?

joeq that is correct. Adobe has not produced any lens profiles for Leica M lenses currently nor have any users made any available.

They are poor candidates for Adobe to profile in that they represent only a tiny section of cameras in common use. More importantly there are in general much less in need of any corrections of this nature in processing.

Saying that another way there is just very little demand and they really don't need them anyway ;)

However you may of course save any adjustments that you have worked up and consider are beneficial as pre-sets for yourself.

Understood - thanks.

As new satisfied user of an X1 I was a little surprised of this,

as user of the x1 you shouldn't expect to much from such a lens correction anyway, as it is already incorporated in the firmware (it's a one-lens-design, so you can expect an adequate correction almous out of the camera).

I don't follow you there, IMHO it is Leica who should provide such lens-profiles. Lightroom is officially supported by Leica and the lens-profiles are still missing.

Thanks Stephan_w, the explanation is logic. I was thinking this, but as a newcomer in the digital world (x1 is my first digital camera) I was not sure if it was just my idea !

grazie

PS I like my x1 and the m7 is becoming jealous...

Hi,

I hope this will find some friends (and Leice read this :-).

Hasselblad has the Phocus software, it increases the final picture quality.

They have individual lens information to correct the digital picture.

If you buy a M9, you get Lightroom. Cool but only the first step.

I truly beleive, Leica should hire a student for a few weeks and release the lens profiles for Lightroom.

It is the easiest way to get the user community freaking out (positive).

If you agree, just reply ... maybe we can create some noise.

And maybe Solms listen.

Cheers

Sascha

Sascha, could you post some examples of the flaws you see in Leica lenses that you feel need to be corrected? I'm not saying they're perfect - nothing is - but in practise I can't think of an image with obvious distortions. Maybe I'm not fussy enough - more than likely.

Aren't the Hassie corrections to compensate for known flaws in the lenses that are not removed in the design/manufacturing process to keep costs (relatively) low?

my 21 often has purple fringing, barrel for sure, and the normal little issues a wide has

my thought was, if a profile could easy some of my post processing why not

and if it improves the result for nearly no effort why not

the hassi comment was to show other vendors use this "trick"

and as it is optional, not a must use feature i do not see that it would hurt

and from a customer satisfaction point of view, i can't see why it should not be done

thats it - just my thoughts

so looks like i will try to build one by myself, just to see if it works

Fringing is a matter of using the right raw converter with the correct setting. Those are not lens problems. The distortion is indeed something els, barrel distortion is easily cured in any postprocessing program, often as a preset.

Actually I don't want any digital fiddling with my lens character, I have Leica lenses for the way they render. They don't need "improvement" .

+1

I really can't imagine some software tweaking the rendering of my 'lux 50 preasph...

Cheers,

Bruno

Sascha, compared to the lens profiles for Nikkors and other lenses, Leica lenses don't need correction.

With the Nikkor 18-200, for example, there's severe pincushion distortion and one end and severe barrel distortion at the other. Lightroom looks at the focal length and decides what correction to apply. That brings you into the ballpark. From there, you do it manually.

With the Leica 21, you're already in the ballpark, so you do it manually. If you want to do it without thinking, just make a lens preset for the lens that calls up the corrections you want.

Until the current Camera Raw and Lightroom, there were no lens profiles except as supplied for camera-maker's proprietary software.

If you think the Leica 21 needs a profile, Adobe has made a kit to make it easy to do yourself.

In order to correct other lens aberrations, Leica allows slightly more distortion than Zeiss. (Those distortion figures are published and readily available.) If you don't want to correct the images in post-processing or aren't interested in making your own presets or profiles, maybe you should try a Zeiss lens instead.

Lens manufacturers don't supply Adobe with lens profiles; Adobe does it themselves.

If you're just beginning to learn about postprocessing, it's a rough start that we've all gone through. And believe me, getting 2-3% distortion out of the way is the least of your worries. :)
