Actually the description quite clearly states (my emphasis): "This part of my fathers collection and from his notes it looks as if the lens was purchased in 1972 but we cannot be totally sure." Shintaro would repaint this for no more than £400? Also this auction is a 'Private Listing' - completely lacks any transparency, and subject to shill bidding. No, the buyer won't be ripped off, the listing now states that the item 'may' be a repaint. As always, it's a case of buyer beware (as long as they receive the lens and it's not a scam auction of course, but it doesn't look like one). As per my original comment, it's up to the bidders to satisfy themselves as to what they're buying. I'm no expert but even I could see from the photos that it looked like a repainted lens. I'm not all that smart I would just like to point out I have no interest in this, I've no idea who the seller is, I just think we need to keep to the facts of the matter - from the sellers point of view he's doing no wrong. I find it almost impossible to sell things and always under-estimate because I'd hate to sell something which I've described as 'mint' only for the buyer to find a microscopic speck of dust inside the front element. I agree : it's the buyer that probably does : I never bought on ebay, so have no experience of what means to verify you did a wrong buy : but stay firm on my idea that buying any "too uncommon" item on ebay is risky. I know this is highly unlikely: but could there be the faintest chance that a UK buyer ordered two Summicroms from Solms- one regular lens and a special order in black? And could it be possible that Solms fulfilled the order- and went as far as using the same serial number for both lenses adding the * to the black one? The odds are small... and I seriously doubt this is the case. I think a Luton repaint is more likely and wonder if Luton would confirm this or not... would Solms be able to provide any information about such a lens shipment based on the serial number?
