Got my M4 back and indeed, its quietness is still a bit inferior to the M3 on my hand. Especially for the high shutter speeds. The M4 sounds like giving you a kick at your butt to drive you to the next shot. The M3 sounds much softer and is like a little pat on my shoulder saying I did a great job. I had a short conversation about this with the repair master. He said the new M6, along with the MP and MA are even louder, and that could be why more and more Leica users nowadays are chasing and worshipping the classic M3s. ktmrider2 Posted September 22, 2023 Share #686 Posted September 22, 2023 Love the goggled M4! I can never decide if the M2 or the M4 is my favorite film M! I have owned more M2's, especially the button rewind variety and its viewfinder is my favorite of all the variations Leica makes. I can easily live with 35/50/90 but I really like the modern loading and rewinding of the M4. Not a deal breaker if I have to use a film spool or have a 135 frame line in the viewfinder. I have been shooting with a mint 50th anniversary M4 with a black chrome finish for the last five years. I would love a black paint one but with prices of $15000 I don't think that will happen any time soon.

Not a deal breaker if I have to use a film spool or have a 135 frame line in the viewfinde The 135 lines in M4 viewfinder are actually four very small triangles in the corners. I have not seen the real “uncluttered” M2 35 lines, but the M4 is already very clean to me. The modern loading is very nice and amazing. Pull out the indicated length of film leader, align it to the center of the prongs, drop the canister, give a light nub to ensure the film doesn’t jam with the gears and rails, then just close the bottom, done. I am using a 3D printed fast loading spool designed by a Chinese hobbyist on my M3. It is still not as carefree as the three prongs in M4, and I am building experience to load it faster and more correctly. I’ve seen someone offering the modification to a fast loading mechanism for M2 on the Chinese internet. So you can consider modifying your M2 into a custom “M2-R” by doing that. I can see in a short future, I would never be able to purchase an authentic black paint M3 or M4. I’m getting more and more used to the silver chrome look of them in my daily usage, and start to think my black chrome M10-P looks a bit dull. And it’s hard for me to imagine what would the look be if I were holding a black paint M4 or M3 on my hand. Sending them to Kento for a repaint and complete overhaul should be the most affordable option to me right now. But parting with an M for almost a year (the queue may be longer now?) may drive me mad!

skilar Posted October 8, 2023 Share #689 Posted October 8, 2023 Recently picked up an M4-P. Curiously it has the M6's strap guards, which I've never seen before. Seems to be a zinc top plate, even though my S/N comes before what was reported to be the switch from brass. Enjoying it nonetheless! Welcome, dear visitor! The zinc plates normally have flush windows. The bumpers are interesting. Thanks for sharing and have fun with it!

I read about the recessed finder window indicating the top plate is brass, but there's a bit of wear that I'd think would reveal some nice yellowy brass, though I'm only seeing silver. I'm not sure what that means, but it sure is fun to use.

Black paint is applied directly to the body while black chrome is an electrolysis process over a nickel or cadmium base.

ktmrider2 Posted November 15, 2023 Share #697 Posted November 15, 2023 My Leica of choice for the past five years is a mint 50th anniversary black chrome M4. It came from Classic Connection with the box and MR4 meter. I paid $3000 for it and I figured it could be sold today for $4000 tops. Well, I was browsing the Leica AG used site and came across an identical body in mint condition from the Vienna Leica Store and was shocked that the list price was 7200 Euros. Only 1700 were made so the value to collectors is going up. With black paint M4's going for $15000 I should not have been so surprised. I will post a photo here eventually. I am in the Philippines until the end of March, 2024 and the camera is in my closet in Anchorage, Ak. At those prices I am tempted to leave it in storage and buy a chrome M2 or M4 for $2000 for actual use. I may pick up another body but I will be using the M4 as I bought it to use, not appreciate in the closet.
alphonse2501 Posted November 16, 2023 Share #698 Posted November 16, 2023 (edited) Ersatz KE-7A Leicameter MR-4 is broken. Although this is for reference, I wonder does original military accessories included the meter or not? Welcome, dear visitor! ktmrider2 Posted November 19, 2023 Share #700 Posted November 19, 2023 I posted earlier about how surprised I was with the price of a mint 50th anniversary M4 being 7200 Euros. The camera is a clone to one I have which I figured might be worth $4000 retail, not almost double that. With prices for black paint M4's going north of $15000 I wonder if others have been surprised with what Leica prices are now going for? It seems to me the more common chrome finish classic M's have settled into a $2000-$2500 price for working cameras that are not collectible. Maybe I should start a separate thread but wondering about owner's reactions.
