It is a dream in the hand, even smoother than my M2 and MP. Lovely, lovely thing.

Regards

I hope Stephan Daniel reads this too. In the new LFI I see that Michael Hussmann at least acknowledges the fact that the digital M getting bigger and heavier cannot count on undivided appraisal with M-shooters

Having had various M's, I would agree nothing winds on smoother than an M4. I am told that it was down to the way that Leica lapped the brass gears to each other.

Yes, I agree. I was demonstrating the difference between the BP of the new baby, and the anodised black finish of my Monochrom to my wife (well she at least tried to look interested.....).

And I found myself thinking how perfect and petite are the dimensions of the M4 by comparison. I know they are relatively small increases in the digital Ms, but to me they make a lot of difference.

Bit like the Porsche 911. You can't beat a 73 Carreras RS!

To say I am besotted by this camera is an understatement. It is the only M model I've owned where everything has come together perfectly. The BP has a large part to play.

M-A? Nein danke!!

John -- Having had the 'M4 (chrome) for a few years, I agree it is a wonderful instrument to use. I recently swapped it into the M-A. Same size (held them next to each other) and weight, the glass is brighter on the M-A and a bit less flare prone. Having said this, when and if I decide to get a second film body it will probably be an M4.

The M-A does sound lovely; an intriguing development for Leica, I think. My last post was a little tongue-in-cheek. I was considering an M-A but always wanted a black M4, and this one came at a pretty attractive price.

I am now busy trying to learn to shoot without a meter. I have a black chrome MR-4 but just don't want to mount this on the camera. If anything, I'll use some form of handheld meter if I find I need it.

Back to basics!

On the other hand, the semi-coupling of the MR-4 makes life very easy and it is not too obtrusive.

I gave up using the Zinc/Air Wein cells earlier this year, as they always seemed to have gone flat when you wanted to use them. My MR-4 was one which was inaccurate with a Silver Oxide cell. I got the small silver oxide cell holder/regulator to reduce the 1.55V of the silver oxide to the correct 1.35V of the original mercury cells.

The other small meter I use, which is a very neat shoe mounting, is the Voigtlander VC-2 on my IIF and Contax IIA.

Thanks Wilson

Yes, I've done the same with my MR-4, using the holder/regulator from the Small Battery Company. I've also used the VC and VCII in the past. They are very neat but expensive, and hard to find secondhand.

I've got a few days of feasting and wine consumption to think it all over!!

Seasons greetings to all!

The Small Battery Company seems to have sorted out their regulators. I tried their PX27 regulators some years ago in my various Minox cameras and gave up after the third one failed after just a few weeks each. I found a whole lot of original mercury PX27's in Vietnam but it was a pain having to take the flat ones down to Sussex University to dispose in their chemical waste bins. So this year I bought a Small Battery Company converter/regulator for both PX27 and PX625. So far so good.

Nice (though there's a separate thread for the M4-P).

And here's mine with the 90 Elmarit-M on top of a bit of "food" (or ammunition).
