Taking the thread back to topic, I would like to give my best thanks to Carl for the organization of the One Challenge and Andy for organizing the dinner in the evening. Thanks to everyone for joining and making this event happening again.

Funnily, I have a similar picture to Maurizio's in a slightly different constellation. It seems this place was rather popular....

If it has to be Palermo then to borrow the Dragons catchphrase, "I'm out".

Sorry but 12+ hours travelling each way on economy really doesn't appeal.

Maybe we can have one or two alternative venues, like the US challenge used to be, hold them on the same day perhaps with a theme next time? Open the challenge up to a wider membership, just a thought?

My first challenge - thank you to all the good men and women that made this possible!

Wow . . . what a cool thing you have going with this challenge :-)

Andy & Carl, you two have pulled something together that was a good and unique experience. My better half (non-shooter) enjoyed the nice company as well, I have already had a 'good to go' for the next challenge (before we knew where the next challenge was going to be).

btw: I am looking forward to go to Palermo. If I have to change planes, no problem. If the flight is more expensive than to Venice - I am willing to accept that. Would have done so for Malta, or Krakau, or . . .

I like to travel, I like to shoot - so I am flexible :-)

May I join the applause for another excellently organised Challenge? New faces, old faces, or should I say: older faces, missing faces: Azzo, James and Steve and others whose name I don't recall right now.

As to Palermo: I voted for it, in the end. Even though it seem it's going to prove an expensive trip from my corner of the world, I will make the effort because, simply, the Challenge is worth it: limited time & equipment, no theme, what a great and simple idea (hats off to Bill)! And I have reached a stage where I will indulge before I am unable to.

Looking forward to seeing you all - and more - again next year.

My first challenge - and wow what a great week end.

Andy and Carl, thanks for the effort you put in, very well organized.

My photos are crap, but we met a bunch of really really nice people and had a wonderful time talking to you all.

We happy to go anywhere next year whatever the final decision will be.

Andy has explained how and why the decision was made, and I realise that however the next venue is chosen it will never be perfect.

These reasons do not appear to have been publicised in the forum. Perhaps Andy can elucidate for those who were not in Venice?

As I have said previously, allowing those who might wish to attend a One Challenge does give them buy in to the process and could make them more committed. There are any number of reasons why people voting do not attend the actual event, beyond the mischief that some on this forum seem to suspect.

The "issue" was that with an open vote, anyone could vote to choose the location, with no intention of ever going themselves.

There is no right or wrong way of doing this but the party in Venice decided that this is the way it would be done this time.

Paraphrasing Lincoln with regards to some people, all of the time, etc, is always appropriate on these occasions, I believe. This was true, even for the meal on Saturday evening.

BTW, this isn't my decision, or my party, I just happened to be there, so I advised Steve when he asked.

I asked Andy in a PM.

Like James I don't think I'll be attending next year's event for the same reasons - with 3 flights there'd be a good chance of mising a connection. A missed connection wouldn't bother me if I was going away for a couple of weeks or more, but on a trip for a few days it could be a big chunk out of the trip. Gatwick is around 400 km from where I live so would involve an overnight stay near Gatwick, so that's out too I'm afraid.

Anyhow, the challenge isn't about who _doesn't_ attend, it's about who _does_, and I'm sure everyone will have a great time.

If we go next year, we will probably see if we can make a week of it. As I found out on Sunday night, driving back from Gatwick after such a weekend and landing at around 17:30 isn't a bundle of laughs and staying over down South (which is an option for us)adds another day to the journey at each end.

Much depends upon what else happens during the year though.

Hi All

I would just like to thank Andy & Carl for a great weekend.

As you know I can not enter the challenge, so here are some of my photos.

I guess I should never say never! I won't rule it out but it's highly unlikely that I'll be able to spare the time for a longer trip, which would really be necessary given the flight schedules I've seen so far.

As Steve says it's about who can attend, and there's always 2012 to look forward to assuming that's somewhere not too difficult to get to :)

HI there

As another Newbie at the challenge I'd like to give a big round of applause to Carl and Andy for the organisation, and To Ivor for the goodie bag and the sponsorship and of course to Bill for the challenge itself.

Emma and I had a great time - we even enjoyed waiting in the pouring rain on the Academie bridge with John - we had a stolen day on Monday in Murano and Burano and back via the Lido (I even went swimming!).

Lovely to meet so many people - like Jana & David, we'll be happy to participate again next year.

Thanks to everyone involved!

I fully accept that it is fair for those who have made the commitment to go to a One Challenge should have a large say in where the event is held the following year. I do wonder, though, if choosing the location rather than putting a small selection to a general vote is the best way to encourage wider participation by those who have not previously attended.

In this instance, the choice appears to be complicated by the lack of direct flights at convenient times. The Easyjet timetable to Palermo for a year's time is not yet available, but based on the current schedule the option with the shortest stay would be to fly from the UK on Thursday and return the following Tuesday. Paradoxically, a shorter trip would only be possible at the detriment of longer journey times, as others have already noted. I have not investigated whether there is a similar situation reagrding flights to Palermo from other countries.

As a full declaration, I have attended LCF meetings in London and would consider participating in the One Challenge. On this basis, I took part in the vote for this year's destination. Had the eventual decision been Wetzlar or Barcelona, I would probably have made the effort to go. Since I have recently been to Venice, it held little interest although I would have welcomed meeting other forum members from further afield.

It is clear that a lot of work goes into making the challenge a success and it would be a pity if this was diminished by what appears to be a decision made without full consideration of all the relevant details.

Andy - I appreciate that you are merely the messenger in all this. Thanks for your explanation.

Regards

Mike

Except for the problem that quite a few of us will never fly Ryanair ! Certainly I would rather walk than fly with them.

HCB did just that. He walked the most part of his trip to Sicily.

Dedication was an essential part of it.

The camera brand is still the same. And it's still built with dedication.

btw October in Palermo sounds great to me :) Happy to visit again!

But isn't one measure of success the number of people attending?

Ok.

Reading all the valid points being made, I think that it would be sensible to reconsider. Palermo is a worthy location, but it does appear on investigation to present some challenges of its own in terms of transport, timing and associated cost at that time of year.

Going back to basics, one of the primary objectives of the One Challenge is to get people together. I quote from the Leica Bulletin that covered the first Challenge in London:

"Bill instigated the One Challenge so that a group of like-minded people could get together for a few hours, meet each other and take some pictures."

I don't want to lose sight of that and the very real concern is that Palermo will be out of reach - in one way or another - for too many people.

So, that said, we can do it as we have done before. Carl still has a note of the top 3, and Andy can put up a poll. We will always run the risk of "tactical voting" but none of the locations (as I remember after a few glasses of wine) were exactly unpleasant.

All those in favour?

Regards,

Bill
