This 1955 DS M3 had a blacked-out  viewfinder and was owned by Arnaud - a.noctilux here on LUF.

Enzo B. in Santiago Chile aka Patagonean rebuilt the prism and viewfinder and installed a M2 counter mechanism - which modded the M3 into a single stroke camera - and painted it in black.

How was your experience with Patagonean? Curious where you're based and how shipping was handled. I've heard he has US folks send cameras to a third party that then ships   to Chile. Was the process smooth and insured in transit? He does beautiful work anyway.

All went smoothly , shipping from France first to the US as you wrote .

No insurance ,  I  used registered express mail .

My 1957 M3 DS transitional body with the original DR Summicron.  It has Budda ear strap lugs, but the modern shutter speed progression.   I bought it from the estate of the original owner.  The original Vulcanite was flaking of just handling it, so I re-covered it.

Not repainted nor original, this M3 was modified with black Leica M parts and the black counter dial was repainted !

Original swedish photojournalists or army black paint M3 cameras came with a black counter dial .

Cheers

Yeah, I love my M3, too!

Been shooting it professionally for documentaries for the last three years using only a 5cm Summarit 1.5 lens and I figure it will take me another 20 years to really get the most out of it.

Here's my latest documentary link:

Finally I gave up to the temptation of owning an M3. I love my M-Rokkor 40/2 deeply and with a round of research I believe pairing it with an M3 would be better to file down the flange to invoke 35mm lines on other M-bodies. I will have the luxury of a 0.91 viewfinder, a huge rangefinder patch and also the ability to composite a 40mm lens with the whole viewfinder! The copy I got my hands on today is so smooth and quiet. The shutter sounds of all stops are amazingly quiet and pleasing, much better than my M4 bought recently. My M4 has issues of deteriorated shutter curtains and is under repairing and CLA. I hope it will act as smooth and quiet as this M3 too, or I will consider selling it and find another M3 in better conditions. 😆 However embarrassingly, I spotted the patch didn't align vertically. The dealer immediately contacted their repairman and promised me it would be fine tomorrow. So I have to be patient for the rest of today before running through my first roll on the M3!
