i don't understand why the s2 is over £20k body only and the m9 is only £5k

the m9 is actually pretty good value for money considering it's built like a tank etc

Clearly M9 is grossly underpriced.... :D, the reason for I haven't yet bought one... I hate "el-cheapo" cameras... :p

Sometime ago Leica realised the deficiencies of the M system so they they developed the superior R system.

Super wide angle lenses like the 15mm super Elmarit, 19mm 24mm 28mm 28mm pc-super angulon 35mm 50mm 60mm 80mm 90mm 100mm APO macro -Elmarit 180mmf2 180mm 2.8 280mm plus the

Leica apo-Telyt -R Module system plus Zoom Lenses etc etc.

Better focusing system, better metering, interchangeable focusing screens and backs , Motor drives and winders.

Who can remember that brilliant innovation called the Digital Modul back.

I am one of those people who love and still use the R system WITH FILM, however last month a was loaned a Canon 40D to use with my R lenses, through a Novoflex Leica R to Canon EOS adapter

It worked flawlessly.

NOW THIS IS WHAT I HAVE BEEN TOLD BY A VERY GOOD SOURCE.

Leica will release a smaller DSLR with a new range of auto focus lenses. (NO NOT THE S SYSTEM)

The MF Leica R lenses can be used.

It will be full frame and have other goodies, and expected announcement this year.

Now if this does't come to fruition you can always continue to use that lovely stuff called FILM.

...and that's where you lost me. I write as an M and R user. The simplistic "four legs good, two legs bad" approach simply doesn't apply.

True: superior size, superior weight, superior visibility...:D

If Leica would make a DSLR with R3-R8 like ergonomics (manual everything, aperture priority mode (A), no AF, centre weighted metering) then I would buy it immediately & collect a few (cheapish) R lenses at the second hand store. If it was fitted with a whole pile of multipoint, smile recognition etc. gizmo's then no thanks.

I have my doubts there, Doug. I have used a 645 system ( Mamiya) for wildlife in Africa, and I found the 500, even more so with the 2x extender, a bit too much of a handful for serious wildlife work, let alone birds. I doubt the S2 would be much different in that respect.

I typically get a lot closer to wildlife than most photographers. Yesterday I photographed a Ruffed Grouse with the 100 APO; the bird was just over 1 meter from the camera.

Thanks Ken.

This is what I'm looking forward to. A new 35mm type DSLR from Leica with autofocus. It would be fine even if it had the DMR's 1.3x crop.

Time to save up and stop purchases in other systems.

Lovely hipotesis...but, as soon as announced, the R lenses won't be anymore "cheap"... :)... Leica insiders can have the opportunity of a big financial speculation... I wonder if there is a market for "future and options" on used R glass :D... with this forum as the reputable market-maker, and "Leicarumors" as the trash market-heater..

I questioned this person on the DSLR and he was adamant that it's on.

He also give me the price..$$$$$$$$$$$.... it's between the M9 and the S2 .......OUCH!

So there you have it, wait and see.

I am also an M user, but I have to except reality, my M7 is brilliant in low light but for everything else my

R series cameras cover a wider scope in my photography.

If the M9 is so good why did Leica bother with the S2 another SLR.

Check out all the Magazines, I would say that the largest majority of the photos where taken with

SLR's not range finders.

End of story.

The S2 is aimed aimed at a totally different market to the M9 - which isn't to say that one person may not own both. A casual glance at the pre-launch publicity will show that quite clearly.

Well.... if you put R lenses on a 5D body......

You do have manual everything, A mode, no AF and centre weighted metering. The 5D (&D2) ergonomics aren't bad, but it would be nice if it were a little smaller.

Glamour, sports action, Macro, wild life, aviation etc etc are the domain of the SLR, where would you fit the range finder....perhaps indiscreet street photography.

Leica know this, thats why they created and continue to build the SLR.

My point is the SLR is overall technically superior to the range finder.

Nevertheless I still enjoy using my M7 in combination with my Leica R's

Yes but no diaphragm preselection with the 5D. No problem when shooting at fast apertures but the viewfinder is too dark at f/5.6 and on.

So I almost got two heart attacks:

1) Oh the JOY of an R-lens compatible DSLR!

2) Oh the HORROR of the price! - not that it's unexpected from Leica... :D

*sigh*...

No auto-diaphragm, several R wide-angle lenses foul the mirror and image quality isn't in the DMR league.

You could have used an M9 then :p
