I questioned this person on the DSLR and he was adamant that it's on.

He also give me the price..$$$$$$$$$$$.... it's between the M9 and the S2 .......OUCH!

So there you have it, wait and see.

Ken.

Humpf... I hope your source is trustable... anyway M9 < Rnew < S2 does not say much... someway obvious it would me more than M9... but there is A LONG WAY to touch S2 price tag... ;)

NOW THIS IS WHAT I HAVE BEEN TOLD BY A VERY GOOD SOURCE.

Leica will release a smaller DSLR with a new range of auto focus lenses. (NO NOT THE S SYSTEM)

The MF Leica R lenses can be used.

It will be full frame and have other goodies, and expected announcement this year.

Well, that would leave Leica simultaneously supporting three different ranges of interchangable lenses - M, S2 and "new R". I hope the good Dr. Kaufmann has very, very deep pockets....

I would like to see a DMR II with FF.
That's true. Why to build a new body when they have the wonderful r8 and r9 to use as a base?

I don't think it's possible. A full frame sensor (the size of which would be physically larger than the active imaging area) will not apparently fit into the film gate area of the R8/R9. At least that's what Leica stated at the time the DMR came out.

You are going to start saving on the strength of a rumour?

I have a bridge you might be interested in...

Regards,

Bill

If the bridge had a red dot I might be interested but then again. I wouldn't be able to afford it :D

I hope it is closer to the Leica M9 than the S2 in price.

I think Leica has deep pockets. Besides financing the S2 project and lenses. They've also financed quite a few new lenses in recent years. 16-18-21mm tri-elmar. 50mm, 21mm, 24mm lux. 24mm elmar, 50 noct. 75mm cron. The Summarit range and recently the Leica cinelenses.

No auto-diaphragm, several R wide-angle lenses foul the mirror and image quality isn't in the DMR league.

The diaphragm remains a significant issue, less so the wides (which may not perform as well with a digital sensor as they did on film?). And whilst image quality may not be up to DMR standards, it really isn't bad! The point is that if you are prepared to shoot manually then this solution exists here and now; its not hypothetical and it does (within limitations) work.

Like so many on the forum, I was shocked when he give me this info, personally I don't like rumours.

Most of us R owners have been shafted a few times so hopefully it will be true.

I did mention smaller but he said something of a modified S2 body, and thats not small.

So perhaps Leica is planing or playing with a 35mm format on an S2 body.

Thats probably why it will be expensive, but with so many R owners out there it could be a winner.

I have no intention of buying the Digital M or S2 but would I buy an 35mm DSLR as I have several R lenses Well depending on it's price and performance..........perhaps.

They also used to say it wasn't possible to fit a FF sensor in the body of the M8 ;)

Also it is impossible to fit an FF sensor in the body of an M8; that’s why there is an M9 rather than an FF upgrade for the M8.

I'm not an engineer myself, so I can't know if the bodies of M8 and 9 do share any components, but the point is that they said first "No FF sensor" and then they made the M9. So if they say that's impossible to fit an FF sensor in the body of an R9, they could end making... :D

The red-edge problem shows that a FF digital M actually still is impossible - management won this round. The M9 relies on post imaging corrections that Leica initially wanted to avoid "we are Leica we do not do post processing".

Still the M9 is a major achievement and probably the management was right this time - compromise or die.

At the time they made the statement about a full frame digital M is _was_ impossible - assuming you wanted reasonable image quality. Technology changes, the physical dimensions of the R8/10 on the other hand don't.

A point Michael has made in the past is that wanting something really, really, badly doesn't always mean that it's possible - no matter how hard you cross your fingers and wish.

A long time ago when I was in industry one of the clients wanted white carbon fibre. My proposal was to send them a kind letter that rumor had it that DuPont was working on that but that we could't help:D

They ignored my advice, what a missed opportunity.

I agree with you as well as with Jaap, whose comment I missed before.

Leica will produce an "S2 Junior." There's too much of a market, especially with all the newbies to Leica via the M9. It will not, however, take R lenses. Leica will make you buy a whole new set of lenses, probably autofocus. That's my prediction. And it will be very expensive.

Surely whether you choose to purchase a whole set of lenses is up to you, not Leica isn't it? Sure, if you've chosen to buy into that camera system you'll need a lens but you would do that in the full knowledge that it's not compatible with other lenses you own (if that's the case) so Leica's not forcing you to buy a whole set. If you don't want to buy a set of lenses, then don't buy the camera - it's not like you have to have it is it? :o

There is a difference- with the M9 they could design the internal dimensions, up to a point. The R8/9 are existing cameras, with a film gate of 24x36 mm (actually slightly smaller). A sensor needs a number of pixels outside the frame to function, ccnnectors, etc. How could they squash that into the given space?

That's why there'll never be a full-frame DMR - but anyone designing an R10 based on the R9 chassis would start by removing the film rails and with them the gate.
