You got it, David & Stuart.

Fiat 850 spider from late '60s (I don't know the exact year of this one).

David -

You might be thinking of the FIAT 850 spider or the FIAT Abarth 850 sport spider.  I suspect it's the latter.  The former never had covered headlights in the US, though it did in Europe.  From the late '60s to early '70s.

Thank You Stuny.

Yes, you are right it was a 850 Spider...don't think he could have afforded an Abarth Version.

So perhaps we have a team effort here in identifying our mystery car.

I'd like to say a big 'Thanks' not just for the Mystery Car itself (which is completely new to me so I will have to check it out) but also for showing the other wonderful, eclectic mix of cars to be seen in this 'overall' photograph. I'm not sure what the event was celebrating but I'm sure you all had a very enjoyable time!

Thanks for posting!

Philip.

Thank you, Philip.

The event was "Retromoteur" in Ciney, a large international car/motorbike/spare parts sale. It happens every year during the Whit weekend.

Large parking areas are reserved for visitors coming with their oldtimers. When the weather is nice, the visitor parking is an exhibition in itself 😊

Please go ahead and take the next turn - Without your mentioning your brother's car I would have forgotten about the 850 Spider.

Would have known that from the first crop but am abroad, hence the 500 was an easy one too because it had to be solved before I left. Plus it was fun 😉

About the 850 Spider this must be an earlier one (65-68) as it has the covered front beams which later serial models (68-73) didn‘t have as far I recall.

Thank You Stuny.  I'll see what I can find/submit...

Btw, I am amazed how portions of the Fiat Spider's nose looked so similar to a Porsche design.  Never the less, my brother-in-law loved and drove his in to the ground!

Indeed, and by coincidence, the Fiat was parked next to a Porsche 911. I found funny I could get the Fiat headlight and the Porsche wheel on the first crop 🙂

Sported Jaguar power.  Make, model and bonus points for years of production?

This looks like the porthole hardtop of the re-release Ford Thunderbird.  I think it was about 2002 when Ford introduced it, and ceased production in 2005.  Too bad.  It was a nice, stylish car.  I think both the original T-Bird ('55-'57) and the new one had the removable hard top as an option.  All of them had a ragtop.

Regarding Jaguar power, this was during the time Ford owned Jaguar (1999-2008) and incidentally, introduced effective quality control in that brand before selling it to Tata Motors of India.

Yes on all accounts.  Built from 2001-2005, it was a production failure for Ford.  Too many potential buyers found it's high styling was unfortunately shy on performance at a higher than expected price.  Wasn't the Jaguar based V8 engine the same base engine used in the Range Rover models for a while?

Well done STUNY..  Your turn.

Good Grief!

I might be going to out on a 'Eurocentrist' limb here but perhaps the offering was a failure for Ford simply because it was considered by the buying public to be a complete, unmitigated eyesore? The description of a Camel being "A Horse Designed by a Comittee" springs to mind. Did any of the stylists in charge of the front/back/mid/roof/ sections have any interaction with any of the others?

The ancient pencil-and-folded-paper parlour game 'Consequences' springs to mind......

Philip.

P.S. No offence intended to any member who might happen to own one of these beauties!

Ford seem particularly prone to producing Gargoyles, from the Edsel via the Scorpio, which looked like a sad frog, to the early 2000's T'Bird, plus I am sure lots of others.

Not only the interior looks cheaper than the one from a low spec Ford Fiesta also the owners manual won "cost cut" prices. It was copied from other "donor" Ford cars and only the parts which were T-Bird special were not copied. Usual owner manuals start with something like "Thank you for buying the new T-Bird, congratulations etc.", the copied manual of the T-Bird started with a warning that the exhaust system contains materials which can cause cancer. Well, not just the exhaust I would say. The whole cheap interior could cause "eye cancer".

Met a US tourist who mentioned he ordered a cool Ford retro "sportscar" for his wife. I asked him which color his wife preferred for the Ford GT and he replied "M 7016, Thunderbird Blue" (the color of the riddle car).

Let's try this one.  Not too much ore difficult than the T-Bird:

Hmmm.  Looks like it's time for more of the car to be revealed.
