No further pix clues to post apart from the whole car – or possibly some 'hints' – e.g., the grill size?

In the early 1980's, my wife wanted to get rid of her troublesome Renault 20 and buy something smaller and more reliable. Our local Fiat garage had one of the very few RHD Autobianchi A112 Abarth cars (?1977). Having had bitter experience with my 1977 Fiat X1/9, where I had holes rusted all the way through the bodywork within 8 months of purchase new, I got the garage to put the Autobianchi up on a lift and found, not to my total surprise, that it was already rotten underneath and had had various rust repairs already done to it. We walked away. Fiat were forced to buy back my X1/9 and I assume scrap it. On investigation, using my work Italian lawyers in Milan, it had been built as a LHD car and then sat on grass in an old military airfield near Turin for 2 years, before being run back through the Bertone production line, to be rebuilt as a RHD car. Fiat had also to settle the not inconsiderable Italian legal fees. My wife ended up with an ex-demo Alfa 33 Estate. She liked it so much that she later got a 33 Sportwagon.

I've just tried cheating and Googled '1970s VW kit cars' and my weak stomach forced me to stop after the first few.

Steve,

My nephew who is a VW Beetle enthusiast, has twice asked me to go and look at VW based "specials". One was a Nova and the other a 356 recreation. They might be the two worst cars I have ever driven and over the last 60+ years and I have driven some appalling dogs of cars. The Nova at least had a reasonable body shell but the underpinnings should have gone to a scrap yard at least 10 years prior to me driving it. The 356 recreation would have made Dr. Porsche weep. As I walked towards it, the 5º positive camber on each back wheel gave rise to some concern. It all went downhill from there, as that was the only way it could perceptibly accelerate.
