stuny Posted November 4, 2022 Share #18722 Â Posted November 4, 2022 Probably a streamlined. Â The tip-off as Pontiac is the multiple parallel strips of chrome on the rear. Â I cannot go any further in identifying the car

Rona!d Posted November 8, 2022 Share #18727  Posted November 8, 2022 Advertisement (gone after registration) 1.000 cars? Good Lord! So this thread is also open to mass market makers? 🤔🤣
Rona!d Posted November 8, 2022 Share #18728 Â Posted November 8, 2022 Just as a starter I would consider 1950s/1960s. FIBRE GLASS. Possibly a micro car from the UK. If it is larger than micro then it could also be a little kit sports car from the UK or US. The wheel hub remembers me of the one the beetle had but the wheels/rims are different. It seems not to be but it looks like a sister from a Berkeley microcar. Â And it also has something from a french little sports car like a Sera-Panhard or DB (Deutsch-Bonnet). wlaidlaw Posted November 8, 2022 Share #18729  Posted November 8, 2022 With that number built, I would guess either Falcon or Fairthorpe. Wilson
pippy Posted November 8, 2022 Share #18730 Â Posted November 8, 2022 (edited) So the consensus seems to be that it isn't a 250 Testa Rossa?...... The shape of the bonnet 'nostrils' definitely ring a distant bell but (a) whether it is the correct bell and (b) whether the car in question was influenced by (a) is even less clear... I look forward to watching this one as the mystery unfolds! Phiilp. Â Edited November 8, 2022 by pippy
wlaidlaw Posted November 8, 2022 Share #18731  Posted November 8, 2022 Those certainly look like either Beetle or Ford 10 wheels, bolted to the brake drums. Wilson
stuny Posted November 8, 2022 Share #18732  Posted November 8, 2022 Wilson - You're felling better I trust?  Not a Falcon nor a Fairthorpe, and I wouldn't be surprised if they are beetle wheels, but I do not know. Philip - Stay tuned.
Rona!d Posted November 9, 2022 Share #18733  Posted November 9, 2022 I saw strong hints to a UK based maker who built in fibre glass. And it seems this one is based on a Ford. So I assume this vehicle was the product of Bill Woodhouse and Tony Bullen who started their company Tornado cars Ltd. in 1957 based in Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire, UK. This model was their first serial product and called Typhoon Sports and could well be from around 1959. About 400 examples of that model made (an amount I personally doubt). They also developed a model named Thunderbolt (?) based on a wrecked 1956 Triumph TR3. The only example made still exists. The dream ended due to financial problems around 1964 with their final model, the TALISMAN which looked a bit like a larger NSU Sport Prinz Coupe or Glas GT. Those equipped with a Ford Cortina/Cosworth engine were popular at club races. edit: Based on this design there were three models TEMPEST (997cc, 41 bhp), TYPHOON (1172 cc, 36bhp - I assume 63bhp) and THUNDERBOLT (1991cc, 102 bhp). All of them could be get as a 2-seater or 4-seater coupe and an open version. Of the TYPHOON they also offered a Sportsbrake version which in 1960 possibly was the very first Shooting Brake before Aston Martin, Reliant Scimitar or Volvo 1800 ES came. Here a snap of the Shooting Brake. According to a Talisman club source a Jaguar racing driver bought the company in 1963 and made a Talisman V8 based on a shortened Daimler SP250. After just two weeks after completion it won the Rallye de la Route in France when Pat Moss only made 6th.
stuny Posted November 9, 2022 Share #18734  Posted November 9, 2022 I should have known you'd get it Rona!d.  Here's the car, and the placard with information about it (you can see there that I misremembered how many were produced, and Rona!d was correct about that, too)..  Your turn. Rona!d Posted November 10, 2022 Share #18735  Posted November 10, 2022 According to the info placard the top speed was about 70 mph. With 36 bhp. That would be the same top speed (even a bit less) than my standard 1964 VW Beetle with 34 DIN hp. Think about a top speed competition with a heavy full metal beetle with the air drag of a double-decker bus and this super flat and light plastic racecar. So I assume this car was made for very small race race tracks where top speed wasn´t the main goal. It should have been lightweigth with a fibre glass body but who knows. Maybe it was an unexpectedly pretty heavy car or had a pretty short reduction gearing for the small race tracks or hill climbs.
wlaidlaw Posted November 10, 2022 Share #18736  Posted November 10, 2022 1172 cc cars are still raced in the UK under 750 Motor Club rules Class C. I believe that even with the quite restrictive engine modification rules, a competitive engine will be making around 60 BHP. https://www.750mc.co.uk/ugc-1/1/1/0/bfe09487-b4fe-4256-b033-bda9eb0c081e.pdf I have a friend who races a Lotus VI with a 750 Coventry Climax engine in 750 Motor Club events as a class B car, competing against cars with Austin 7 and Reliant Robin engines. This is a so called pub Lotus, as it was built behind the pub where Colin Chapman used to drink and had his first Lotus factory. Wilson

The 997cc engine had 41 bhp according to the Tornado company adverts, so why should an 1172cc engine has less? OK, the base was the Ford E93A which had 30/31 bhp. But just 5 bhp tuning? Doubt. As these were kit cars (some offered finished by the company) the engine power was pretty different based on what (poor) people installed. When used in serious racing the engines were heavily tuned so we can assume 50-70 bhp.
