Excellent photo of an iconic race car, Kent. Was this taken at Road America?

According to "Bench Racer" rumors, Augie Pabst bought this particular Scarab, chassis #002 - the first of the two RHD cars, from the bankrupt Meister Brauser racing team for $500 and was unsuccessfully offered $5,000,000 for it earlier this year. I remember seeing Lance Reventlow's own street-legal LHD Scarab, #001, parked in the Chevron gas station at the Beverly Hills end of the Sunset Strip in 1964. I was jazzed! Walmart heir Rob Walton now owns this car.

Steed (John W) as you guessed correctly, are you going to post a photo?

Steed only passes this way in frequently; so.... on his behalf (and with some connection to his character) I'll step in; however this time we need to know the exact car, not the type.

For an extra 1000 points can you name the EXACT watch in the shot?

Non-Leica shot...... yet again. :o

Yes, Road America BRIC races in 2005. I can't speak to the prices paid or offered but I believe those rumors to be generally correct. Although I haven't seen it in years Augie also has the rear-engined Scarab. The only Scarab that I haven't seen at some point in my life is the F1 car that Don Orasco (sp?) owns.

Oh yeah, the second shot was taken in the paddock after the RA 500 in 1960.

OK..... first name the car........

Could I name it Billy Bob? Then would it be Billy Bob Bentley?

If so, the other reference I suspect would be to Le Mans.

But for their footballer's car they used a Breitling and I don't think that was a Breitling. Need to look in my posh watch catalogue to work that one out.

Bob (without the Billy and without the Bentley, not even the footballer's version)

I think I'll say that you are near enough: the car is one of the Birkin supercharged team cars and the watch is a special Breitling with a 24 hour dial made to celebrate the 2003 win at the 24 hours. This was one of very few given to the wining drivers and key team members, the back of the case is exquisitely engraved with a Speed

Over to you.8 and some nice words. I find it almost impossible to tell the time with this instrument!

Thank you; the Bentley seemed obvious but not the watch. Sometime since I have been to Le Mans - experiences from drenching, cold rain to a nice time in the pits with a Porsche my employers were sponsoring. A friend of mine suggests that we take a motor-home one year and spend a few days there - eggs and bacon in the morning and a decent meal in the evening. Maybe.

I should have a picture by the end of day CET and I think the car will be European. It could be prosaic or maybe different.

If this works it is a crop from a photo made with a Digilux 2 - 5Mp so it is a bit of a stretch. I would have thought this was impossible but I have been taken aback by how knowledgeable people are and so I just included a small detail to help.

Right continent but wrong countries. Here's a bit more - apologies for not great quality. Type should be reasonably well known world-wide.

Volvo P1800 S or ES

Correct

I had stopped at a petrol station earlier this year when I saw this car also there and I started talking with the owner. He had just completed a two and a half year restoration and this was its first real run on the road. I asked if I could take some pictures and he was mighty pleased. Perhaps you can say the exact type of P1800.

it's the P1800ES so 1972 or 1973.

The only things differt in the 1973 are:

- New illuminated switches to the left of the steering wheel for windscreen wiper, windscreen washer, rear window defroster and fan.

- Changed first gear ratio for better traction force

- Protective steel tubes in the doors

- Filter unit for emission control inside the radiator grille

- Flame retardant upholstery

- Improved wipers covered 10% more of the windscreen

- On cars for the US market the bumpers were extended to comply with new regulations about shock absorbes at a speed of 5mph.

-B20F engines in the US cars were modified for 91 octane and the output was decreased to 112 hp SAE

-Radiator moved forwards

So I think it's the 1972 because of the smaller windscreen wipers! But those can not be original ofcourse :D

Was it painted Metallic? If not: it's not original. The P1800ES has only a licht blue in metallic (paint number 111). And the non station P1800S and P1800E have the light blue not metallic (paint number 99).

So the not metallic light blue has only been used between 1969 and 1970 with the amazon's and non station P1800.

I can't be sure if it was metallic or not. As you can see it was a brilliant day and the sensor of the Digilux 2 found the range a bit of a challenge. While I thought I was standing on the forecourt of the petrol station it turned out to be a road and I had to jump out of the way quickly after this shot. I have dimmed down the highlights as far as possible but the photo does not tell me for sure. When the owner was showing me the engine bay he was concerned to stress originality but it doesn't tell us about the colour.

I was particularly happy to use this car as it was also popular (relatively) in America. Next time (if I should manage it again) PasMichiel I shall have to think of something more obscure than fire-retardnat upholstery or slightly longer wiper blades. You are a mine of iinformation so over to you.
