plasticman Posted April 28, 2010 Share #1 Posted April 28, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Just a general query - do you tend to include your original purchase receipt and papers when selling an item? I'm selling a camera which I bought new from Robert White, and one of the people in the queue wanted to see a copy of the original invoice - which I mailed to him with the actual purchase amount blanked-out (I felt the amount was really none of his business). Now when discussing the purchase, he requested that if he gets the camera that I include the original invoice, or an unedited copy in the box. I've never experienced this before, and wonder what other people think? Not a big problem really - I don't have anything to hide about the original purchase - but at the same time it seems to me that proving the camera is rightfully mine, and that I'm the only owner should be sufficient information. Everything else feels rather like a personal intrusion.

Doc Henry Posted April 28, 2010 Share #2 Posted April 28, 2010 Plastic, As is a sale of the owners, an "act of private" sales is sufficient ("I undersigned Mr. Platicman, hereby declares to have sold a camera ....") if he wants , he can have a copy of the original invoice but the act of sale is more important to prove that he has purchased and "not stolen" It's what i do when i sell ! I will keep the original invoice, especially if there is something purchased with the camera as a lens per exemple for customs at airport ! E-bay woes don't just originate from sellers, you know...
earleygallery Posted April 28, 2010 Share #4 Posted April 28, 2010 Only thing I can think of is if the item is still under warranty, otherwise your own 'receipt' should be sufficient. If you're uncomfortable with the request simply tell them so and they can choose to buy or not.
plasticman Posted April 28, 2010 Author Share #5 Posted April 28, 2010 Okay thanks guys. I sell so rarely that the process is still a continual round of surprises for me. After this camera sale I hope I'm done for a while. I think there's a Northern English saying that sums-up my impressions: "There's owt as queer as folk". wattsy Posted April 28, 2010 Share #6 Posted April 28, 2010 I think there's a Northern English saying that sums-up my impressions: "There's owt as queer as folk". Nowt as queer... Owt has a different meaning altogether. Somebody might ask "do you want owt to eat?" and your response might be "nowt, thanks".

wattsy Posted April 28, 2010 Share #9 Posted April 28, 2010 Incidentally, I never include an original receipt/invoice with anything I've sold. Apart from the fact that I might need it (if it's a business item I need to keep the paperwork for something like 7 years) I also share the view that it is an intrusive request and a possible sign that the buyer is going to be a pain in the arse. RockyIII Posted April 28, 2010 Share #10 Posted April 28, 2010 I usually send the original and keep a copy, unless there are other items on the same invoice that I still have, in which case I usually keep the original and send a copy. Rocky
wilfredo Posted April 28, 2010 Share #11 Posted April 28, 2010 I have never included an original receipt and I have never requested one. You could always say no to the request and move on to the next buyer.
lct Posted April 28, 2010 Share #12 Posted April 28, 2010 As far as you can keep your originals and send copies.
christer Posted April 28, 2010 Share #13 Posted April 28, 2010 I have bought two M7s using eBay and - without my asking for it - both came with invoice and receipt and all the other paper work and also all the packaging. I found it a nice gesture.
farnz Posted April 28, 2010 Share #14 Posted April 28, 2010 You could always enquire why he wants it ... Pete.
plasticman Posted April 28, 2010 Author Share #15 Posted April 28, 2010 Thanks to everyone for the advice. Well it turns out that the guy ahead of him in the queue will probably go through with the sale anyway, so it becomes moot. But I've never experienced this before (though I've sold very few items before), so I wondered what the 'form' was. My preference when dealing with sales is to endeavor as fairly as possible to follow the order in which people get in touch - regardless of whether they are a pain or not. So this guy was worrying me, as he was quite high in the list.
MPerson Posted April 28, 2010 Share #16 Posted April 28, 2010 Probably to do with Customs. Depending on the value, it does provide evidence that it is a secondhand item he has purchased.
