rolu Posted May 7, 2010 Share #81 Posted May 7, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Funny that we already know how a new lens exactly renders - when we havn't had yet any chance to see it's results nor to compare them with those from the previous model. There is still the prejudice around that the pre-asph. 50-lux had a smoother bokeh than the asph. Here we have the chance to look and compare and to find out that the prejudice is not true. Perhaps we'll once be able to look closer at those prejudices from the results of different 35mm-lux asph. Perhaps. Until then I think, that those people at the optical department of Leica know what they have to care for when they present a new lens. Sure I don't know HOW it will render EXACTLY, and I didn't say that! I only said that the rendering of a new 35 without focus shift will be different from the current LuxA35, which is influenced by spherical aberration. - But isn't it a question of logic? Focus shift is caused by spherical aberration. - Sorry I wrongly said "chromatic" - it must say "spherical". (Didn't find it in English) " ... Die sphärische Aberration führt bei Objektiven zur sogenannten Blendendifferenz. Dies bedeutet, dass bei Veränderung der Blendeneinstellung sich die optimale Fokuslage verändert. Dieser Effekt ist insbesondere bei lichtstarken Festbrennweiten stärker ausgeprägt. Eine genaue Beschreibung der Blendendifferenz finden Sie auch in den Camera Lens News Nr. 30 im Artikel „Objektive objektiv messen“ ab Seite 24. .." p. 10 f. http://www.zeiss.de/C12567A8003B8B6F/EmbedTitelIntern/CLN_32_de/$File/CLN32_dt_web.pdf So if a new 35 is corrected to have less focus shift, it will have less spherical aberration. Physics. And less spherical aberration will mean a different rendering. Physics.
Advertisement Posted May 7, 2010 Posted May 7, 2010 Hi rolu, Take a look here new Summilux 35mm [ Merged ]. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
UliWer Posted May 7, 2010 Share #82 Posted May 7, 2010 I agree with you. And I am glad that physics keeps away from judgements about "wonderful rendering which will be lost".
rolu Posted May 7, 2010 Share #83 Posted May 7, 2010 ... judgements ... Absolutely agreed! No judgements possible - and I didn't mean to judge it, but only say, that I personally prefer it. This is clearly a very personal, subjective decision and everybody has to decide for him/herself, if one likes a rendering, which is influenced by residual errors of spherical aberration or not. But I think we agree, it is a matter of physics, that residual errors of spherical aberration draw a DIFFERENT bokeh (e.g. old versus new Nocti, old vs. new 50Lux). If you like the one or the other - that's personal.
adli Posted May 7, 2010 Share #84 Posted May 7, 2010 According the Norwegian Leica importer, the new 35 Lux was to be launched earlier this year. The production line was set up at Leicas premises in Portugal. However, when they started production, Leica found the quality to be below Leica standards. The production line was shut down and Leica is now looking at how they can produce the lens with the desired quality at Solms.
Valkyrie Posted May 8, 2010 Share #85 Posted May 8, 2010 The Leica US new products web page has the new 35 lux at the top of the page just above the V-Lux 20. But the image and links appear to be the old lens, at least when I checked.

So after printing brochures, displaying the lens on the US site and fixing prices of it and its accessories, Solms suddenly discovers that the lens is a dog. Curious isn't it. The Camera-bodies have been produced there since the 70s - but no lenses. Makes me aware again not to trust any talk from "insiders" - neither when they say they had a new item already in their hands nor when they tell you the opposite. Well, Leica will never confirm or deny such a story, so we will probably never now the real reason for why the lens was apparently almost ready to launch and then suddenly total silence. UliWer Posted May 8, 2010 Share #92 Posted May 8, 2010 Well, Leica will never confirm or deny such a story, so we will probably never now the real reason for why the lens was apparently almost ready to launch and then suddenly total silence. That it was "ready to launch" was a rumour. You don't have to search in Portugal but just have to look at the state of demand and delivery of other lenses which are not new to find a reason or two why we were not surprised by a new lens earlier this year. lct Posted May 8, 2010 Share #94 Posted May 8, 2010 LUF members have seen this already (see above). Looks like Leica USA (and Leica UK ?) are the only ones referring officially to the new lens though. Another true-false leak or some unprecedented Ukraine-USA-UK conspiracy? Focus shift improvement? Other stuff? I really like my 35 lux and it would take a lot to make me consider a new one.
