On Monday, I read that they were shipping the camera connection kit. I called the Apple store in Chicago and they said they did not have them in yet. I then ordered online. Somewhat to my surprise, I received an email that said it would ship in early May. I was surprised because the article I read said that someone had received a notification that the kit had shipped.

I am curious, is there a file finder application on the iPad out of the box or available as a lap? I'd like to see the file structure on the iPad, but the hood doesn't seem to open.

Mine is on its way. I'll report back when I get it.

Thanks Jeff, although I understand all the European iPads are somewhere in the middle of a cloud of ash in Iceland.

That darned ash cloud stranded me in London for five days; I was lucky enough to get on one of the first flights out of Heathrow Wednesday morning. :D

For those of you lucky enough to have one in hand, have you tried the Zenfolio app? Seems that would be a good setup for a serious photog. Question is if you upload from the iPad will it convert to PNG or JPG?

From what I can see, the Zenfolio app is just a custom interface to the Zenfolio website. Nothing special about it. It also only exists in an iPhone version; nothing for the iPad as of yet.

They are definitely not shipping yet. I just checked my status and its listed as late April, same as my iPad 3G. I did get a recent email from Apple confirming that I should expect my 3G in late April.

As for your second question, no, there is no file finder and I doubt there ever will be. I am quite sure that Apple doesn't intend you to access the core file structure. That said, apps can create their own structure, and iPhone OS 4.0 will provide a folder structure for files.

You can use iPhone Explorer to play around with the files inside your iPhone, should you wish. I assume it would also work on the iPad iPhone Explorer 0.9.0.3 - FREE Download iPhone Explorer - Look into the file system of your iPhone and down- and upload files by USB connection - soft82.com

Yeah, sort of. Apart from the fact I would be awfully nervous about malware from a place like that, this also not an app that has any support from Apple, and to get the full functionality it requires you jailbreak your phone. I think for the hacker types, this is fine, but I understood the question to be about native access with an app made for the iPad. But if anyone wants to take the risk....

As for the camera connection kit, I just got an email tonight that mine has shipped and will arrive by mid-week next week. I'll report after it shows up.

ILounge has posted a preliminary review of the iPad Camera Connection kit. It's mostly good news- the iPad preserves the downloaded photos in full resolution (including RAW). Here's the link:

First Looks: Apple iPad Camera Connection Kit | iLounge

That is looking hopeful. However what is not clear is whether the iPad can display the image if you take/transfer DNG/RAW only and then maybe only display a thumbnail. It looked as if they were transferring RAW+JPEG in this test and the display was of the JPEG.

I just got my camera kit and used it to load raw only DNGs from my M9 sdhc cards. The photo app only displays a low res version of the file - presumably the embedded jpg. More investigation to follow when I try to move the images back to my laptop or try some of the photo apps against the transferred files.

This is exactly what I suspected, which means the iPad doesn't really have raw support. It's not too surprising really. I'm guessing it will show the high res images if you shoot raw+jpeg.

I'll give it a test - that's certainly what I've heard from others. The low res jpgs are horrible enough to make me enable jpgs for this reason alone.

Update:

Just tested raw & jpg and you do indeed get decent jpgs if you import this way. The import image thumbnails display "RAW + JPG" and then further expansion after import displays the jpg version. For these purposes basic jpg should more than suffice.

If you use Aperture 3.0.2 you are going to find the iPad import of raw and/or jpgs a great feature. You can have iTunes sync pictures from iPhoto or Aperture, but you can also go into Aperture and access the iPad as an import source and then choose whether to import raw, raw & jpg or just jpg images, plus decide whether to keep the image types together or separate.

Graham,

I wonder if you could do this in Bridge as well, by declaring the iPad as your camera in Image Capture and Bridge as the linked program. IC is a weird program. I had lots of problems with Capture One V5 firing up when I plugged almost anything into a USB port (any HDD, iPhone etc). I tried every setting on C1 with no improvement and I had the boys at P1 scratching their heads as well. I found it was Image Capture which had C1 declared as the linked program for USB image storage devices. Disabled that and problem solved.

Wilson,

By default ImageCapture wasn't set to any applications at all.

I set it to Aperture and of course it launched the app and had the iPad as a source device for import. When I tried the same exercise with Bridge and Capture One they both launch as expected but they lack visibility of the iPad. However, Adobe Bridge Photo Downloader does pick up the iPad and displays the available files & thumbnails and will import them :D Ditto with Lightroom - it goes straight to the import dialog.

One thing that I did notice was that ImageCapture itself opened up the iPad and listed the files with import options to put them on to the hard drive. Last time I recall running this app I only recall seeing the option to associate an application - but maybe my memory is failing me because I don't remember this application having such rich functionality in the past.
