Dear Andy,

On the M8 the red edge would be outside the frame area, so the red edges would not be visible.

At least not in the case of the WATE.

Best regards

Trond

So is the magenta shift on M9 due to the lens or the sensor... or both? ie the sensor cannot cope with the shallow angles of light from a wide angle... why is it not even across the frame edges? Sorry so many questions.

I would not expect Leica to create specific correction for any non-Leica lens.

I don't expect. Main message from my post is - that for Leica lenses with larger red corners without coding - do not expect one solution from any firmware - that will work with 100% of photos. My observations are the same to people who already tested Leica glass - good under one sort of lighting, worse under another.

And simply when I saw how it works in LR - it is now fully understandable for me.

Even CornerFix profile I had - worked better with one conditions than with another.

Why the obsession with the CV15? You don't really think Leica will correct for this lens? Big difference in construction between a $350 Cosina and a $5K Leica WATE. And why code as a 28 Cron??!! It's a 15mm.... You are very confusing.

Answer is simple. I used before joining M - zoom to 14-28mm. And 99% of time I had it set to 14mm.

So why to buy WATE if:

- CV 15mm is sharper

- CV 15mm is lighter and smaller

- I would use WATE 90% set to 16mm anyway?

The effect of the red shift will be reduced by good exposure with enough light and stengthened by underexposure in the edges.

I confirm that.

Correcting in LR gives much better control with highlights, like sky - than any "single for all solution" - CornerFix or firmware software correction.

Y E S ! ! ! You got THE ultimate solution for red edges: Crop your pictures by 33%! :D :D :D

Buy a M9 and use it as if it was a M8! (at least for smaller than 35mm)

(Trond, this post is nothing personal. Just a drop of humor & irony)

Dear Artz,

I have a even better solution.

Since the red edge in my case is only on the left side of the image, and only affects sunlit scenes.

It is sufficient to just chop off 10-15% of the left edge.

Sunlit scenes hardly ever happen in my part of the world, so the problem is virtually nonexistent.

On those few keepers shot during the rare occasion of sun light, it is sufficient to chop of 12% of the left edge of the picture.

I already have a plug-in in LR for doing that automatically during import.

It detects the sunlight by comparing the blue dot, ISO, meter data and EXIF g-stop.

The image becomes effectively a 4:5 aspect ration, letting me think it was shot with a medium format camera.

Best regards

Trond :D

Sorry, but the examples you showed with the CV 15mm were seriously underexposed.

I can try to repeat it with increased EV +1 or even more.

Then sky will be burnt most probably. Don't you think?

Do you suggest to overexpose central part of frame?

In relation to the M8 it's interesting that there wasn't much discussion about this red shift until the M9 came along. At least, not that I'd noticed on this forum.

Maybe I missed it.

Andy, I raised the same idea at http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m8-forum/118421-new-m8-firmware-just-around-corner.html#post1263227 and got the response:

We had plenty of awareness of the red shift firmware over compensation way before the M9...

but without verification.

Must be that the people with the M8 red edges noticed it and the rest of us didn't?

I certainly don't recall this kind of brouhaha before the M9.

That's exactly my experience. (Though I remember one thread about some "red issues" with the WATE from 2008 or even earlier. I searched a lot for it, but couldn't find it any more).

I bought the 3.8/18 Super-Elmar in July 2009. When I first saw the red shift, I thought, it's the sun. When I saw it on indoor photos, I thought it's the white balance.

Then I read Sean Reid's first test of the M9, where he wrote about the red shift especially for some CV wide angle lenses. I thought: those red edges seem similar to what I have seen with the 18mm and I asked here in the forum with examples of the M8 on 09/16. At the same times the discussion about the problem with the M9 arouse.

Sometimes photography has a lot to do with what you want to see and where you want to look.

Well I am pleased with the lens on the M8 - though I am not pleased with results like the second photo in the following link (the first one can be corrected, the second not):

http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/forum-zur-leica-m8/98843-problem-mit-dem-super-elmar-18mm.html#post1040024. (Yes, I used the UV/IR-filter unless I stated it otherwise for the given examples)

If you scroll down to #15 you find an example with the WATE on the M8.

why people blame the leica FW not be perfect on non leica lenses????

Andy,

and do you know why it's not perfect with Leica lenses?

Me, like many others - repeat many times, few in this thread, that Leica is supposed to correct red croners with Leica glass. Not 3rd party ones. But even this can't be acomplished.

Or maybe we should treat every word exactly - improved <> perfect...

..............Though I remember one thread about some "red issues" with the WATE from 2008 or even earlier. I searched a lot for it, but couldn't find it any more). ..............

In my experience, the red issues with the WATE had more to do with reflections in the UV/IR filter of the rather profuse white lettering on the front of the lens .

I have not seen it on WATE pictures with the M9, but then.. I probably only see what I want to see :)

first one can be corrected, the second not):

Only quick play with LR. If you want, send me more details on priv. so I can play with it more.

Also would be easier for me, if I would have more samles of grey card style for that body lens combination.
