jplomley Posted February 25, 2010 Share #1 Posted February 25, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) This laborer was standing on his porch in the late afternoon in the village of Chivirico. The discretionary approach I usually take with street photography just does not apply when you are the only caucasian in a village of Cubans. One stands out no matter what, and you are constantly being watched. It is extremely unnerving, but one must keep in mind that the people are simply curious (Chivirico does not see a lot of tourists). So I approached and in my best spanish introduced myself as a student of photography from Canada (Soy un estudiante de fotografia. Soy de Canada. Me permite una foto por favour?) I got the nod and went to work, making only two images of the most striking aspect of this individual. Needless to say, he was bemused when I crouched down and captured what I believe to be a hallmark of a life of hard labor. roguewave Posted February 25, 2010 Share #3 Posted February 25, 2010 Jeff, interesting choice. I like the processing, but the strange blue cast takes the eye away from your central element.
AlbertoDeRoma Posted February 25, 2010 Share #4 Posted February 25, 2010 Bravo. I like the picture and enjoyed the story behind it! Alberto
wilfredo Posted February 25, 2010 Share #5 Posted February 25, 2010 Excellent composition. There is an earthiness about this picture that I like very much and the texture of the soiled feet give it plenty of character. This is not your usual Cuba shot so I commend you for that. You have a sensitive photographic eye. Esta buena la foto Chico. ;-)

allamande Posted February 26, 2010 Share #17 Posted February 26, 2010 Yes, it's the hands and the feet that tell the story and this image does a great job of putting that across. My only slight concern would be that the color work is so gorgeous and dreamy that it ends up almost romanticizing the situation. How about BW? as others have already suggested. PhotoArchival Posted February 26, 2010 Share #18 Posted February 26, 2010 Agree with Ben and Ece. For me the color/processing seems a bit 'glam'. Maybe something more subtle.... But I like the capture. Amado
