wstotler Posted January 27, 2010 Share #21 Posted January 27, 2010 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) Very cool thread! I picked up an Elmar 5cm, f/3.5. (Dated from 1953.) Draws beautifully--and has a strange (desirable) handling of the out-of-focus areas! Way, way different than modern glass. And, it collapses on the M8--I haven't had a problem. Few shots. I really like the B&Ws it produced for me. The color wasn't bad, either--it just looked "old." Maybe that's the pastel color handling coming through. P.S. "Lensporn" macro shots of the Elmar 5cm can be found here: Elmar 5cm f/3.5 (1953) - a set on Flickr Welcome, dear visitor! brianv Posted January 27, 2010 Share #22 Posted January 27, 2010 1949 ZK Sonnar 5cm F1.5, wide-open on the M8. ISO 160. And remember, a J-3 wide-open is the perfect AA filter for an M8. 100% crop

If this thread gets the attention it deserves, Leica's gonna want answers why new lens sales have fallen off. Maggie O's '59 50mm Summilux is killer.

mathomas Posted January 30, 2010 Share #30 Posted January 30, 2010 is even more fascinating IMO than the newest and sharpest... Here a 28/5.6 Summaron on a cold winter morning.... I am convinced that old glass and digital M has something special, very subjective I know.....thoughts anyone? regards Andy Nice tones. Has kind of convinced me to keep my '56 50mm Summarit and try it on some landscapes.
digitalfx Posted January 31, 2010 Share #31 Posted January 31, 2010 (edited) This thread made me pull my M2 out of a box and try out a 50's Summaron 3.5 (sans ir filter). The lens has alot of haze, can this be cleaned? Edited January 31, 2010 by digitalfx
Alberti Posted January 31, 2010 Share #32 Posted January 31, 2010 If this thread gets the attention it deserves, Leica's gonna want answers why new lens sales have fallen off. I like to second this opinion. I do like e.g. my M90-macro (I can capture a single thread of a spider web at 3 meters distance), sure, excellent, contrasted to my old 90-Elmarit that was not far as sharp, but such a sweetie... alberti
brianv Posted January 31, 2010 Share #33 Posted January 31, 2010 On the lens haze: I have had very good luck getting haze out of the 1950s coated Leitz lenses. I good shop that is familiar with Leica lenses will have no trouble.
2Bébèrt Posted January 31, 2010 Share #34 Posted January 31, 2010 Even with haze your old glass still draws wonderful digitalfx. Super thread, finally discussion about lenses and photographs...
brianv Posted January 31, 2010 Share #35 Posted January 31, 2010 (edited) I changed the shim for this 1953 KMZ Jupiter-3 yesterday, to optimize for the focus shift between F1.5 and F4. This was made possible using the M8's immediate feedback. I love that "Little TV Screen" for shimming lenses. I set the shim for the focus to be optimal at ~F2. That means F1.5 is very slight front-focus, and F4 has some back-focus. But overall, a good compromise. I find the early 1950's J-3's to be the best, this one is no exception. brianv Posted February 1, 2010 Share #37 Posted February 1, 2010 That is too funny. I've used a 1952 Nikon S-Mount 25cm F4 Nikkor-Q with a Nikon DSLR, using the n->F adapter. You have me beat.

brianv Posted February 11, 2010 Share #40 Posted February 11, 2010 Glad you picked up the 8.5cm F2. It is the lens that made Nikon famous. It is very good, even wide-open. I need to put mine on the M8, will adapt a 49mm IR cut filter to it.
