Pophoto,

Good luck with your trip. you seems like a very reasonable guy, I responded to the way the original question were stated. :D

Any girl understanding your joy of photography is a lovely woman indeed.!

As for the camera, use it, if it get lost, snatched or otherwise, so be it, let the insurance deal with that. while it is a M9, it is also "just" a camera, its a hammer for making pictures, not more not less. Your girlfriend on the other hand is a un-calculable treasure.

Have a great trip. Im looking forward to your pictures - regardless what camera you use to take them.

Thats nonsense

People are people

poor or not

If you shoot with respect...

Sebastiao Salgado shot in India

Werner Bischof in South America

Walker Evans documented the hard times in the states

If it`s not making snapshots, but trully capturing moments and documenting, i think your girlfriend is creating a problem in her own head with a poor argument...

@Bo: Thanks for the kind words, I'm not the one going on the trip, I was merely responding to the person who is.:D And perhaps being a little cheeky at the same time! M9 a hammer? Surely different tools built for different love!

@pelagia: My wife even helps with my camera insurance (getting me insured), what more can I ask for?

In your story, I'm sorry to hear about your loss, but seems like your adventure was priceless!

Remember: Cuba is the land of Alexander Korda and his famous Che picture, made with a Leica. I recall walking in the streets of Havana with my M6,10 years ago, between the Plaza Central and the Malecon, not the best neighbourhood then, and some one called out from the second floor: "Que lindo Leica!" And we had a nice conversation. Do take your M9: no regrets expected!

This reminds me of a client I had once who having taken a dream holiday to India complained on her return of the poverty she saw on her tours - she felt that having spent a large sum of money on a 'luxury' holiday that they should have somehow been protected from seeing such sights!!!

Bo, it was one of those genuinely jaw dropping moments of shock, I was agreeing saying how terrible it is for some people, assuming that she was showing compassion and concern, then came the remark about it being a luxury holiday etc.....as a client there was a limit to what I could say back once I'd regained my composure!

Alberto Korda.

And don't forget: He never saw a penny for all the reproductions of his famous Che-Portrait, because he gave a print to an italian publisher who never paid any royalities.

I am working on a book on Cuba for 2011, and should point out that the anecdotal evidence indicates a fairly large jump in petty crime. A musician friend who plays a lot in Cuba, speaks the language fluently, was robbed in his car for an Ipod. A guy next to me at the airport had had his digital camera snatched while tying a shoelace. Given that there is absolutely no film processing in Cuba, there is no interest in my cameras, and everyone knows that my relatively new Rolleiwide is "veio". I also work with a Noblex on a tripod, though what is nice is that few people know that I am taking in 145 degrees. A few points: don't think you can blend in by not dressing in idiot tourist clothes. I find that many Cubans, who have to line up for everything ( I remember waiting 90 minutes to get some frozen lobster parts) are strangely self-absorbed while queuing and seem not aware of others lining up. Parts of Havana are sketchy, and even in suburban Vedado I have been warned by locals about photographing at night. I frankly wouldn't wander around with an M9. Get a Panasonic G1 and you will probably get better street snaps. Things are pretty tough economically in Cuba right now, and everyone is suffering.

i am going to cuba soon. today my girlfriend told me that she don't want me to 'shoot' the poor people with such an expensive toy. waaaah.

she told me ' for that kind of money a poor family could survive for months.

cheers

Why are you shooting poor people in Cuba? Are the images going to help them get a leg up,

change their life's for the better? If not, that's really cheep of you with such an expensive toy.

Maybe because they are more interesting personalities than rich people? And since when do we take photographs with the express purpose to change people's life for the better? And what difference does the gear make to the subject? Come to think of it, I suspect social photography, historically often using Leicas, has done more to improve the lot of poor people anywhere than any politician' s promise.

this makes no sense. did you think about this before you typed it? according to your logic, seeing how taking photos won't help these poor people, therefore you are being cheap by using an m9. however, if you use a $400 p&s it's not cheap. or, if you're using a D700 it's ok, cause it's cheaper than an m9. at what cost for a camera is it ok to shoot poverty?

I can understand your girlfriends feeling and it seems her heart is in the right place. I have lots of family in Cuba and hope to visit in 2010. Although they lack in material wealth, they are rich in dignitiy and the population as a whole is extremely educated. I don't think of Cuban's as poor. I think you will do them justice if you use your M9 to capture something of their resilience even under the worse of circumstances and a U.S. embargo that continues to cripple the small island nation. If you can use the camera to that end, more power to you. If not, leave it home and keep the girlfriend.

Well spoken Wilfredo.... my reasons for going to Cuba would be the " people and culture first and then photos.

Every time I meet someone from Cuba I am always impressed by their level of education, social awareness/political and multi- language skills. I find I can talk about any topic and they do not mind my French sounding Spanish.

Of course there are people who do the same thing here, there is no interaction between people and who they photograph..so really when photographing people , show respect and get to know them. Their life stories is what you will take with you, the photos a reminder of that exchange.

Cheers, JRM

You really think my comment was about a camera? I didn't bring up "poor people".

I'm sorry for the sarcasm.

you didn't bring up poor people? re-read your first sentence.

sarcasm or, tone of voice, is difficult to pick up on an internet forum.
