New (to me) Digilux 2 on the way!

Well, it finally happened. After several failed attempts, last night I won my Digilux 2. It should be here later this week. Just in time for some fun family holiday photo ops! I can't wait. I also picked up one of the ND filters. I'll be traveling somewhere very bright and sunny in the near future and figured it might give me some nice creative options. Plus I got it for a ridiculously low price on ebay (how's $45 USD sound?) I couldn't pass it up. If anybody's looking for one let me know and I'll send you the link to the listing. I think the seller had 1 left.

Now the questions:

What sd cards are generally considered to work best with the d2?

What bags have you successfully used with the d2? Crumpler, domke, leica, others? Looking for something small that won't attract much attention (it has to be readily available too, so the leica branded d2 bag is probably out), and preferably reasonably priced (ok, cheap:rolleyes:) , so probably no billingham's, either.

Thanks for all the help, I would've never decided to spend what now seems like an absurd amount of money on a 5 year old obsolete 5mp compact digital camera without the support and encouragement of all the fine people on this forum:p

I guess we'll see in 4-7 business days. Seller looked legit, though. Solid image of the actual filter (text on the filter ring matched others I've seen, comes new in Leica box), seller has tons of feedback, all of it 100%, sells a ton of Leica stuff. Nice thing about paypal, though. If it turns out to be a scam I get my money back.

You are welcome ...

That's the right place, for another D2 fan !

For sd-card you have to consider that max capacity should not exceed 2GB.

I've load a SanDisk Extreme III witch is useful for fast transfer to computer.

You can find other brand test on Thorsten D2 pages, a must read.

For bag, I was lucky to get the the original leather one. I use it for long travel with some custom adjust to fix camera in-there.

But on field, it's still ready on my shoulder !

Happy holiday !

I presume the 45 USD was for the ND filter, not the D2...

Mine normally resides (when not in use) in a Domke F-8, which is almost perfect size for a loose, quick-draw fit when using the lens shade (I´ve read the original leather case is a bit tight), but at times I use a Billingham Hadley Small.

Hope your new camera has had its sensor replaced, and that everything works out OK; in that case you´ve got yourself a truly great camera! Good luck!

I am glad to hear the good news!

You will love your D2! I use a Billingham Alice (L2) bag and it is great. I can take the D2, the Wide-angle adapter, polarizer filter, ND filter, Macro lens, SD cards and the charger.

Regarding your ND filter, I bought one for $17 and it was in great condition, like new! Sometimes you can find really good bargains out there!

Post some pictures taken with your D2 when it arrives.

Hi. Welcome :)

I've been using a 2GB Extreme II since the D2 came out.

And I bought the Crumpler "5 Million Dollar Home" for it. It's been perfect - inconspicuous, doesn't look like a camera bag... I don't like to hang cameras around my neck. This one has just the right size to easily slip the camera in and out with the shade on, and the camera won't fall out even if the bag is not closed. The clip allows to quickly open and close the bag. I "customized" it by removing the large velcro area - which makes too much noise and is totally redundant. It also allows to store a few small accessories (namely: extra battery, lens cap, passport, paper, pen, extra memory card, tissues), while remaining pretty small. If needed, it also holds the large charger - though then you'll be at capacity.

Check today's Ebay for Filson field bag: it's for carrying ammo and doesn't look like a murse. They look better has they age.

USED Filson camera bag w/Domke inserts. If you are looking for an inconspicuous camera bag this is it. I have had it for about 8 years and have used it heavily in the Northern areas of Pakistan. I have made several field repairs, see pictures, but it is solid and has protected my Leica's.

Here's what I use. Different from other recommendations, but I really like it: Pelican case for Digilux 2

Sounds like something fishy....

Well, the filter showed up today and I couldn't be happier. Perfect condition, Original box and plastic case, and a ridiculously good price. Now if I just had a camera to try it out on...

I suspect most people on this forum prefer filters such as B+W which cost more but the quality is there. You probably got a generic filter but I suspect it will do the job just fine, hopefully it is multi-coated to resist flare. Welcome to the D2 club.

I think the OP got a Leica 69mm ND filter, from the sound of it. They show up from time to time on the auction site, new, for that price.

Wilfredo, that's one _nice_ kit in the picture. I wondered if you had posted anything comparing IQ between the two cameras, so I searched, found 410 hits, and then thought I might ask you for a link to that post, if you've done one.

No, I haven't done image comparisons between the two. I can't say that I remember anyone doing this on the forum. If anyone has done this it would probably be Thorsten. The D2 has it's own "flavor." I don't expect the same IQ as the M8. For more serious work I still prefer the M8 but the D2 can pull its own weight. I use it mostly when I have need of a "point and shoot" and I've been very pleased. There is something gritty about D2 files that I like very much.

Here's one of my favorite portrait shots with the D2. I've only owned the camera for a few months. http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/people/105986-morning-saint-don-ruben.html

As mentioned, I use maximum 2 GB Cards, from different brands (Sansisk, Kensington, Verbatim).

Bag: I modified a suitable Samsonite Shoulder Bag for discrete transportation. It has room for the camera, and some more things. I "armed" the bag´s front and rear part inside with thin plastic plates, and for the camera section I used a black foam which I adjusted to give a good compartment for my Digilux 2. As an alternative, the original leather bag seems to be a good solution.

And: it is really NOT a waste of money to spend in that "old" 5 MP camera - which is - from my point of view, a very good Digital Camera - still!

Important: the sensor should be changed if it is not already changed yet. So you are sure to get a full working camera. The change is free of cost. Only Problem is that you have to send your camera to LEICA for a week or so :D

Thomas (and others)

Thanks to this forum, I bought a Digilux 2 (serial number starts with 299.) It's working just fine now, but the sensor has not been changed. I don't mind (too much :() sending the camera away for a couple of weeks, but I thought that you cannot send it unless the sensor has actually failed. I read several threads on the topic, but I am not aware (or I don't remember) anyone sending it for a free sensor change before the sensor malfunctioned.

Will Leica replace sensors before the fail? Any personal experiences or suggestions would be welcome.

Thanks a bunch,

Alberto

P.S. Bonus scary pic. I am still learning to use the Digilux 2, but here's a shot I took last night at a xmas party. Indoor, handheld, no flash with a light source on the floor to intentionally create scary faces - which two of the subjects did quite well (ISO 200, f/2.1, 1/15s)

Well, let´s put it this way: A D2 owner I happen to know well () got a tip from a knowledgeable person that if the camera was sent to Leica with a claim that the sensor was defective, they never actually checked, but just replaced it and returned it.

It did work.....;)

Should add some considerations: Obviously there are downsides to sending the camera in; it takes several weeks, and there is always the risk that something gets fouled up when opening it.

Also, so far there´s no time limit set for the free sensor replacement, and all specimens might not even need it, so no reason to inundate Leica with D2´s for premature service. Only when one, say, plans a long journey with the D2 as the only camera, and doesn´t feel comfortable with the thought that the sensor might go dead in the middle of it, is there a "legitimate" (or rather, sensible) reason to do it.

Hi Alberto!

Nice foto - sure it was a very funny party :-)

About the Sensor: when I planned a trip to Korea I wrote to the Customer Service in Solms, Germany, if they could tell me which serial numbers are the bad ones. Unfortunately there is not a special serial number with bas sensors.

Solms answered that I shlud send the camera for check. After 10 days I get back may camera with new sensor and completely checked! So it is really possible to change the sensor when it is not already down! I only can write about my experience with the Service in Germany. Maybe it is different in other countries, but I assume it is not. Especially when you plan to take your camera with you on a vacation, it is necessary to have a sensor which will not fail!

Have many good times with your Digilux 2!

Greetings

Thomas
