Going to Cuba 1/28/10--Need M9. What to do?

I hope to be in Havana for two weeks starting 1/28/10. I have been on Amazon's wait list since 9/20/09 (which seems like a bad place to be), and a small-time local dealer's list since about the same time.

I read about people who got on lists elsewhere, after I got on mine, and who/ve received their M9--sometimes within days or a couple of weeks of ordering. I talked with David Farkas at Dale Photo yesterday. I respect his integrity a lot He says his best guess is that it will be early February before I can get an M9. My question then is: does anybody have a good idea on any other options out there? I will not pay more than $7K. I will have to sell my M8.2 around the same time, but don't want to sell it now, wait for an M9, and have no camera to take to Cuba. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I do like my M8.2 and it's tempting to just keep it for a couple of years and just wait until the next great thing comes out--an M10 or whatever it may be.

If you didn't have any reasonable camera I would have understood your complaint, but because you have an M8.2, why not just keeping things easy an normal.

Best thing to do is taking your M8.2 and enjoying Cuba.

The M9 will come, when it comes. No patience in this world anymore?

I still find my M4-2, M6 and M8 give me superb images. They produce gallery quality up to 17X22 prints - and although it would be "nice" to have an M9 - I would hardly lose sleep because you were "stuck" with "only" the 8.2. Remember - virtually every great and iconic photographic image till now has been made absent an M9. My suggestion, if this is a special trip - spend less money, use a proven technology and buy a second non M9 as back-up. My choice would be an M6 as electricity can be funky is some parts of the world.... BTW.. what are you planning to do in Cuba - and how are you getting there ( Charity, religious, journalisitic? ) Thanks..and good luck. Best. Coos

I can relate to the problem, as I recently found myself in a similar dilemma. I would second "Mokkacream" - no hasty purchases, save your money instead for spending on location, and take your proven M8.2 with you. It might be second best to the M9, but right now, it's the best tool you could possibly have.

After two weeks of use, here is my first clear conclusion :

If you don't print larger than A3+ and don't take 80% of your shots with a 35mm 1.4 lens wide open, than there is probably no real need to upgrade from the M8.2.

I understand the point about not printing bigger than A3, but could you please expand on your second point about the 35 lux wide open. What does the M9 do better than the M8.2 in this respect?

To get the same FOV and speed on the M8.2, you would need the 24mm Lux which is almost the same cost as the M9 and significantly bigger. Therefore in this case, buying the M9 makes more sense IMO.

If it helps, i am going to siri lanka in february and would have loved to have taken an M9, but to be honest, the longer i am waiting for it, the more i appreciate my M8 and the more i am likely to wait for the next model, even though i do print larger than A3+

But that said, if my dealer rang me today, i would be very very tempted :)

Oh yes- and we could live without an M8 as well - plenty of excellent picture taking machines out there. I can quite sympathize with the OP. Of course it is big fun to take out a new camera on a great trip!

I'm guessing Amazon can't/won't tell you where you are on their list (especially since they're actually working through a 3rd-party supplier for electronic items). But how about your small, local dealer? They should be able to give you some sense of where you are and when delivery might happen?

Anyway, Steve, I'd suggest that in addition to staying on the two lists you're already on, keep calling around to a bunch of the smaller dealers. Seems that those bits of serendipity we hear about of folks stumbling onto an M9 without waiting usually involve some out-of-the-way dealer that most people don't think about. The big dealers like David, Amazon, B&H, Popflash and the like are all going to have huge lists.

Best of luck. I can surely understand your desire to have your new M9 on your trip. The good news is that supply definitely seems to have picked up in recent weeks. It still might happen for you.
