jsrockit Posted December 4, 2009 Share #1 Posted December 4, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) For those of you who do not think it is taboo to use a flash on your M8, which flash are you using? I would like something relatively small.

jaapv Posted December 4, 2009 Share #6 Posted December 4, 2009 I bought a Metz 20 when my SF24D died. Wrong decision, nasty thing.
jsrockit Posted December 4, 2009 Author Share #7 Posted December 4, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Cool, seems like the only good option... a bit expensive, but the right size.
lct Posted December 4, 2009 Share #8 Posted December 4, 2009 I bought a Metz 20 when my SF24D died. Wrong decision, nasty thing. Could you elaborate on the Metz 20 Jaap? It has bounce capacities at least doesn't it?
jaapv Posted December 4, 2009 Share #9 Posted December 4, 2009 But it produces very harsh light and is built like an el-cheapo toy.
lct Posted December 4, 2009 Share #10 Posted December 4, 2009 Do you get that harsh light in bounce mode as well?
wstotler Posted December 4, 2009 Share #11 Posted December 4, 2009 I use an SF24D on my M8. +1. But off camera, hand-held, with a Nikon SC-24 cord. Experimenting to improve skill.
DWatts Posted December 4, 2009 Share #12 Posted December 4, 2009 For those of you who do not think it is taboo to use a flash on your M8, which flash are you using? I would like something relatively small. Hullo J S Rockit I have used a Leica flash that was originally supplied to use with the CL model, a good few years back. Its not as strong as the current ones bit it is more than enough for portraits. The actual size is 5.0 cms Wide x 7.5 cms High 2.5cms Thick slightly bigger than a box of matches. I have used it now for about 9 months, bought from a Leica Premier Dealer. and am very pleased, I try to use large apertures but occasionaly I use the flash for back light portraits. See if you can find one, I think I paid £45. Good hunting. David Watts, Cornwall.
Big T Posted December 4, 2009 Share #13 Posted December 4, 2009 I use a Nikon SB-15. Works very well with the M8.2 in manual mode.... Cheap on eBay.... Also use a Nikon SB-80DX. Bigger and more expensive but is the best flash I have used so far. The bounce works as well with the M8.2. SB-15 = In the bag just in case I need a flash. SB-80DX = Comes along when I know I will be shooting flash.
jaapv Posted December 4, 2009 Share #14 Posted December 4, 2009 Do you get that harsh light in bounce mode as well? The SF24D with Sfill gives better results than the Metz 20 in bounce. Both cannot hold a candle to my ancient Metz 32MZ4
lct Posted December 4, 2009 Share #15 Posted December 4, 2009 Sfill is a diffuser i guess. Too bad i have no experience with those little flashes. I need one for travels where i don't bring diffusers anyway so the absence of bounce capabilities will be a deal breaker i'm afraid.
jaapv Posted December 5, 2009 Share #16 Posted December 5, 2009 The Sfill is a very handy folding thing by Leicagoodies. It folds to a small flat sheet and is fixed to the flash with Velcro. Highly recommended.
Bo_Lorentzen Posted December 5, 2009 Share #17 Posted December 5, 2009 Don't forget the Nikon SB15, strangely it is actually recognized as a flash and set the camera to sync (for some reason mine is set to 1/30th) Naturally there is no TTL, but the sensor works well. the flash folds out and can bounce upwards, the flash also can rotate upwards to bounce to the right. The unit is off center, and work well on a M camera because the flash in normal use position "hang" to the left, leaving clear access to the shutterdial. and it fits in a coat pocket just fine. . Bo_Lorentzen Posted December 5, 2009 Share #20 Posted December 5, 2009 Thank you Jaap, I will have to change lenses and see what happens with the 50mm etc. very cool. lct, actually I prefer the SB15 because it flips out the flash unit and can bounce it, the newer SB27 do not permit the flipout part, so as far as I am concerned, since I do not use autofocus and don't need the AF iluminator, the SB15 often selling at something like $20-40 on ebay is by far the better deal for me. .
