stevem7 Posted November 29, 2006 Share #1 Posted November 29, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Yet another in my series documenting the homeless in Phx, AZ I was only able to snap ONE shot of Mary. I have seen her for the past 2 years roaming the streets. Even in the summer when it is 120 degrees she is out in this coat. She has been on the street many many years and has this coat, a blanket, a purse and believe it or not, some old make-up. When I approached her she was smoking and when I asked to take her pic, she threw down her cigarette and tried to fix her hair. She was flattered. She talked for 15 minutes, and it was getting dark so I had to get home. I shot this with an F1 noctilux lens at I believe 1.4. rob_x2004 Posted November 29, 2006 Share #2 Posted November 29, 2006 You know what? I reckon it is better than any of the others you have posted. Top stuff. Just something about it. Retained dignity? Something like.

shootpeople Posted November 29, 2006 Share #4 Posted November 29, 2006 Really solid Steve. Background is so clean and offers great contrast to the situation.
stuny Posted November 29, 2006 Share #5 Posted November 29, 2006 Steve - This may be the best one so far in your excellent series. Great light, subject, tones and framing.

phc Posted November 29, 2006 Share #8 Posted November 29, 2006 Very good pciture Steve - you obviously built up a rapport with her in the few minues you talked. That really comes across. P.
gverdon Posted November 29, 2006 Share #9 Posted November 29, 2006 Agree... The dignity you caught (and perhaps instigated) make this portrait. Thanks for sharing. Gérald
fotografr Posted November 29, 2006 Share #10 Posted November 29, 2006 When an image is this strong, you only need one to tell the story. I'm curious, do any of these people ask why you want to photograph them? If so, what do you tell them?
stevem7 Posted November 29, 2006 Author Share #11 Posted November 29, 2006 Thanks! After I talk with them for a bit I ask them if I can take a photo. So far, they have all said yes. This started out as a school assignment (photo class) and still is (my final assignment has to consist of 10 prints presented in a book on any theme I wanted) a school assignment but after the school project is complete I am going to continue this as I am learning quite a bit from it. azzo Posted November 29, 2006 Share #13 Posted November 29, 2006 Another great capture added to your collection of very strong images Steve. I would be very tempted to try out a tight crop of this lady's face. Well Done. Best Azzo
baloo Posted November 29, 2006 Share #14 Posted November 29, 2006 Hi! Very strong image as it bean said she seams to have a lot of milage (no bad intention here) but it doesn’t show that she is home less, very good portrait, you seam to have a good approach with people, I wish I could do it! regards, Steve

stevem7 Posted November 30, 2006 Author Share #19 Posted November 30, 2006 Thanks again! Here is one more, though I do not like it as much as #1. It was getting dark and I only was able to fire a few shots. Steve
azzo Posted November 30, 2006 Share #20 Posted November 30, 2006 Steve this is good also, but the expression in the 1st image, is so strong, that you can hardly beat it IMHO. And that is the reason why i suggested a tight crop on the nlady's face in my 1st post. Best Azzo
