I have a small valued order on back-order with Robert White (Poole) & had an e-mail stating that as of 6pm tonight they stopped trading & taken been over by Flaghead Photographic. Hopefully not an end of an era.

Did Robert White refund you for the back ordered item, or confirm that the new owners will fulfil the order?....

They sent me an email earlier today that my back order was in & shipping, then another that the company had changed ownership as of 6pm tonight. It was an automated email that offered me the option of a refund or continue waiting; seeing as my order (Z1 hood for ZM sonnar) has already shipped.

I've bought from them in the past (mainly just for filters etc., because I was already in a customer relationship with another Leica dealer) and I'd always found them to be extremely helpful; actually beyond the call of duty, like other Leica dealers I have encountered. Yes, their displayed prices being ex-VAT was a bit unusual, not to say idiosyncratic these days, but it was always made clear that this was the case, so no problem when you factored it in. I'd be sad to see them go if the change of ownership meant "rationalisation" (oka "closing down").

I had my latest delivery from them yesterday. They are one of three that I use regularly.

I had been led to believe that they would continue as before, but in new hands.

Is this incorrect?

I hope they continue as before. I have bought quite a bit of stuff from them over the years, the last being a demo Monocrom with very few actuations and a 50mm f1.4.

  • 3 weeks later...

Back in the 1960s I worked for a small camera shop that sold Leica. When the owners had bought the business the Leica rep came by to explain that the Leica license was always with the owner, not the business, so changing owners meant the business could no longer sell Leica, unless the new owners got their own license - which they did.

Of course that was a long time ago, and in the USA.
