New M240 photos

After lurking on this wonderful forum for months, I hesitate to post my first comment as a thread of its own, but I thought many of you would like to know that Dr. Ulrich Rohde has posted on Dpreview a link to a number of new photos purported to be from the M240. I have to say I don't find them very exciting at all, but they do seem better than his first group of photos from a few weeks ago (plus the sensor is clean this time!). I'm interested to hear what forum members think. Unfortunately the small size of these images makes it difficult to judge sharpness and detail.

 

Note that the photos with the ID tags beginning with "L" are the one he identifies as M240 photos. The ones beginning with ULR are apparently shot with the S2.

Are you sure that's the correct naming system? Look at the first image with a U tag. It's a photo of the S, I believe. If there were only two cameras in use, the naming scheme should be other way around.

I'm new here too but have ordered the M hoping to switch to Leica at a good time. The pictures aren't magical but again its bright and sunny in the sea so its a fairly harsh shooting condition. The pictures from the S2 looks a little better exposed compared to the M which looks darker in general.

Once again, it's hard to pass any sort of judgment from web sized (and small, at that) jpegs. These shots were also taken in broad day light, which is fine when evaluating low ISO performance, but one can't do that with the images displayed at this web-sized output. Colors seem a bit high keyed, but could be the processing or OOC JPEG engine...

 

I wish Leica would release some official images....

Essphoto, I agree that the file naming is confusing, but in the DPR thread Dr. Rohde himself says "The ULR refers to the S2". I'm not sure what to make of the fact that there is clearly an S2 in the first photo that was apparently taken by the S2! Maybe there were two S2s on the boat.

 

Yes, Ashwin, some full sized files would be great to see! I imagine we don't have to wait much longer for them now.

Who are these beta testers and why? I understand Sean Reid, Steve Huff, Michael Reichmann et al. but why do these other people release these tease pictures that tell me NOTHING about the quality of the new M?

They are just rich guys with connections.

 

I'm not sure that these add anything to the fount of human knowledge as far as this camera is concerned.

 

Might soon be time to re-subscribe to LFI though.

Much better photography this time (albeit still not exciting). However these pictures, again, hardly tell us anything about the technical merits of the cameras used—except that they can take sharp pictures in broad daylight (doh), and that the colours are terrible. Especially red is way out of whack, and I'd say so is blue. Maybe it's just ham-fisted post-processing ... but remembering the poor M9 colours, I'm afraid it's not.

I have to say, those photos look like they could have been taken with any inexpensive consumer digicam. They don't do Leica any favours that's for sure! Some nice photos in themselves, but very saturated and irregular colours, and skin tones look very red to me.

Agree about the colors, but the M9 color problem was the raw conveyers not being tuned, after a short while all was well. Here again it may well be the lack of proper profiles.

Guys, he's just a betatester. It has already been mentioned in a previous thread this does not mean he has to be a good photographer. He should just stop posting pictures on the interweb.

Quite apart from the photographs he appears to be well qualified to pick up electronic glitches. Not a bad idea at all.

There are such things as NDAs. I cannot imagine Leica is not involved. Choosing this route with these results tells me Leica is still tweaking the colors.

 

(Btw I predicted this better batch in the earlier excitement:D:D. My new prediction: the next accidental/rumourlike release will show completely different colors...)

I'm not sure who is worse. The 'techy professor' with the CV, or the fools who actually take note of what issues forth from him.

 

In good time, I presume, Leica will publish 'good' files from the new M for slathering hungry beasts, but hopefully they have learned to rush slowly to 'feed the chooks' (quote from a past Australian politician) and wait until all is right!

 

If your good pics are dependent on samples of M files, I suggest they won't be any better after the release of teasers, so just go make pictures, if you can.

 

Methinks Shakespeare got it right when he wrote "much ado about nothing". (yet)
