JBA Posted May 15, 2009 Share #4 Posted May 15, 2009 My newest pieces of gear: R8 Motor 50 Summilux-R The APO 180 3.4 Telyt is one of the main reasons I got into the R system and I have not been disappointed. It's an absolute masterpiece.

wizard Posted May 15, 2009 Share #6 Posted May 15, 2009 SL2. Way out of reach at the time I wanted it (which was back in the mid seventies). If I could have afforded it back then, I would most likely not have bought any other camera since then. Andy

edlaurpic Posted May 15, 2009 Share #8 Posted May 15, 2009 Regarding the 180/3.4, I've had one for at least 20 years, actually maybe longer, having gotten it whenever it was first offered to the public. When I first got it, I thought it was fantastic. Then I moved to digital but not to the DMR, so the 180/3.4 sat in a drawer for 10 years. When I finally got an R9 and DMR I also got both the 180/2.8 APO (ROM) and the 180/2. Meanwhile, the 180/3.4 is still in the drawer because, for some reason, I had come to the conclusion—unsubstantiated by my own photos, mind you—that the 180/2.8 APO was superior to the 180/3.4 and the 180/2 simply blew the other two away for great bokeh. This is embarassing to admit that I formed these opinions without giving the 180/3.4 another chance on the R9/DMR. Should I have given it another chance? If so, what is it about the 180/3.4 that is superior to the 180/2.8 APO (forget the 180/2...it's a different horse for a different course, which I realize).? Is it the relative light weight and smaller package that the 180/3.4 represents or is there another reason you are all so big on it?

RockyIII Posted May 16, 2009 Share #14 Posted May 16, 2009 I wish I had bought an M8 before I spent so much money on Nikon equipment. Sometimes I wish I had bought a 35 Summilux before I bought a 35 Summicron. Rocky
topoxforddoc Posted May 16, 2009 Share #15 Posted May 16, 2009 DMR 180/2 Summicron 280/4 APO Although if it weren't for the first Leica kit I bought (M6TTL and 50 cron), I would never had trodden this long and illuminating path. Now maybe, if I'd owned those earlier? Charlie

Is it the relative light weight and smaller package that the 180/3.4 represents or is there another reason you are all so big on it? Surprisingly I have almost the exact same experience withe the Leica 180 s . I bought the 180 3.4 apo when it was released went through a few copies but still have the last version with the 60mm filter. I also have both the 2.8 and 2.0 apo s and use them on my DMR. For pure optical performance the 180 3.4 is still competitive with the newer lenses. The big difference is the focus/handling. The 180 2.8 apo is by far the best handling longer lens I have seen. The focus mount was designed for two finger adjustments .....I can follow focus a surfer with this lens. It also mates with the 1.4apo extender to create a great 250/4 (thats a 350FOV on a DMR). The 180 3.4 was designed for military use at distances . It performs its best at infinity. It also has a very long throw(read slow but precise) ....I always found it difficult to use for sports ( and used the older 180/2.8 pre apo version just for the ability to focus). For travel the 180 3.4 is still a fine choice but I find the 180 2.8 apo as an almost perfect lens. The 180 2 is just to big and heavy for most of my work .
