jtharvie Posted June 17, 2010 Share #1 Posted June 17, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I just received my M8u with a 35 'cron (Canada). Sadly, the lens didn't come with a lens hood. Is this a necessary piece of kit? Any ideas where I could by one? The dealer tells me this is a difficult item to acquire. Any help would be greatly appreciated. This is my first rangefinder so I have a bit of a learning curve to go through. Cheers, jth
Advertisement Posted June 17, 2010 Posted June 17, 2010 Hi jtharvie, Take a look here Lens Hood for 35 Cron. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
earleygallery Posted June 17, 2010 Share #2 Posted June 17, 2010 If the lens has a 39mm filter thread (I think so?) you can buy a lens hood from a camera shop or off ebay. If you want a Leica hood phone 'round some dealers. In the meantime you can use one of your hands as necessary (shield the lens from the sun but keep it some way from the actual lens to avoid getting in the frame!) luigi bertolotti Posted June 17, 2010 Share #3 Posted June 17, 2010 There are few situations in which the hood is NOT useful... personally, I simply keep it on always on my lenses. and, despite your dealer's words, a hood for the Summicron 35 is very easy to find... new or used : there have been several Leica hoods for Summicron 35... metal, plastic, round, rectangular... and consider that on M8 you have always the UVIR filter on, and the sensor is smaller than 24x36... so is not wrong to use a hood made for 50mm lenses, also very easy to find. jtharvie Posted June 17, 2010 Author Share #4 Posted June 17, 2010 Thanks fellows. I managed to find a rectangular version online through Adorama. The fellow assured me it will fit on my 'cron. Cheers, jth

Michael Geschlecht Posted June 19, 2010 Share #6 Posted June 19, 2010 Hello Everybody, The primary function of a hood is protection from front impact damage. My v.1 35mm Summicron is here undamaged today after impact w/ a marble countertop was prevented by a now dented 12585H. This hood can be really good at cutting down flare in certain situations thereby increasing picture quality, if I make sure the dent is properly oriented. Don't underestimate the multiple importance of a proper rigid hood. Best Regards, Michael
dicko101 Posted June 19, 2010 Share #7 Posted June 19, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Flare and glare don't concern me. The biggest benefit of a lens hood for my 'Cron is to protect the lens so it is always ready for action. No stuffing around with caps and such. Any ideas where I could by one? The dealer tells me this is a difficult item to acquire... If yours is the version 4 Summicron (11310), you can use the original 12524 rectangular plastic hood but also the current 12526 which suits 35/2 asph and 28/2.8 asph lenses as well. They are almost identical (pic) but one can use a cap (14043) on the current 12526.
