Here is my latest addition. An a La Carte M7, which looks like the lovechild of an M3 and M4. This is my third M7, although the other 2 are long gone. My first M7 was pre-ordered before the original launch. I have also had 3 MPs over the years, but despite my preference for the look of the MP, I enjoy the speed of Aperture Priority for street shots. So this camera, to me, is the perfect MP/M7 blend. BP would have been even better, but this one was an absolute used bargain, mint boxed, from a reputable dealer.

So here it is. Next to my 2 more recent digital Ms. Having not owned a film M for a while, I can't believe how much bigger the M240 is compared to the M7. It's a monster!

Now, off to shoot some film.......

Hi everyone, I'm a new member and this is my first post here on the forum. I love my M7 !

I also have a Leica IIIC that has been in our family since bought new by my grandfather in the 40's. I use the M7 for family, kids and travel pictures. My pics are not good enough (yet) to post on the forum, so I will start as silent reading member and try to learn from the forums ...

The picture of the M7 has been taken with the older LTM summicron 50 mm from the IIIC mounted on a Nikon V1. Eric

Nice. Is that a Hadley small? How are you finding it with the M? I have the Hadley Pro and often wonder about its smaller brother....

DigitalM7 -- I want to second want John wrote: POST! Most people do here offer constructive comments. It is a worthwhile exercise. Besides, I am thinking of swapping my M6 for an M7 and would love to see some photos.

Best,

Steve

I have a few M7 questions for the group:

If you buy an .72x M7 used, can you have it modified to show just the 35/50/90 frame lines? How long does this take and how much does it cost?

B&H has a "starter set" package of a new M7 and 50mm summicron for $6,500 USD. If you order a new M7 à la carte, can you add a 50mm summicron to the order and get an equivalent discount on the lens as if you bought the starter set?

If you order a black chrome M7 à la carte with the MP-style advance lever, is the lever in black paint or black chrome?

a; yes, you can let the frames modified, I don't know the costs, but it won't be really cheap.

b; I doubt, starter set is always the straight one, for "normal" customers is Solms not really giving discount. Probably you local dealer could help you. It depends on your negotiation skills.

c; black chrome

This past weekend I took my Leica M7 out for a little shoot as I hadn't used it since 2010. I thought I'd show it a little love by taking at along for a Father's Day surprise trip to Kyoto proudly sponsored by my wife.

Sadly the love for M7 turned somewhat to frustration as I encountered the dreaded flashing ASA for pretty much most of the weekend. I've had my M7 since 2003 (therefore the original springy DX reader rather than optical) and I must say I don't recall having this problem before.

The DX reader would read my Portra 160 & Scala 200x (my very last roll, hopefully not too many shots wasted) but would randomly flash ASA at various point of me switching the camera off & on.

I thought switching to manual ISO would work around the issue whilst using aperture priority but after reading the forums, I'm not so confident it'll calculate the right shutter. Guess the M7 will finally have to go back for a overhaul.

The Hadley" Small will hold a 28mm elmarit, a 50mm Summicron, and a 75 mm Summarit 2.5, plus both a MP body with half case attached, and a M-E with half case. Plus film. SDHC cards, cleaning brushes ' n stuff, charger & cable. Maybe a small meter too.

The "I love my MP" is the largest by far in the film forum, with over 3,000 posts.

"I love my M7" is not doing as well, with just over 200 posts.

So for those of you who prefer the M7 over the MP, what are your reasons?

Much of the love for the MP seems related to romantic notions about the perfect or ideal Leica. What is the mentality or perspective that leads one to prefer the M7? Or, on a more practical level, what are your observations or points in the M7's favor?

I've never shot with a MP, but have had some experience with a fully manual camera, the Minolta SR-T. Speaking purely about the manual exposure experience, I prefer autoexposure as it is faster and easier for me to work. I was also very much used to the way the M9 handled autoexposure, so I bought the M7 over the M6TTL and the MP for that reason.

I still have a hankering for a MP, more for the purpose of having a camera that is not dependent on batteries for operation, and one that represents the pinnacle of Leica's mechanical film camera production. But for practical reasons, I stick with the M7, M9 and Zeiss Ikon for the auto exposure capability.

Around here "romantic notions about the perfect or ideal Leica" are definitely not limited to the MP. Or haven't you noticed?

There's no need for a condescending tone. I didn't say such notions are limited to the MP. I only said that you often see such notions associated with the MP.
