Is inconsistent M9 distribution hurting Leica?

For completeness - my info came from the two main Leica sellers here in Melbourne and then a call to adeal. Hoppy, I don't know how many included deposits but i know the first few on both lists included sizeable deposits.

Another piece of info - in Australia the silver version is running 50/50 with the black. Not sure how solid the 4:1 production number is but that will be a factor as well.

Not to mention the Aussie dollar skyrocketing to make our price even more "exotic!!"

Thanks Ed. Just as I assumed!

I hadn't read that 4:1 production figure anywhere. You mean 50:50 preferences on orders placed in Melbourne? You must be hard wired into the info channels.

It seems the known delivered quantities in Aus are now doubled. Up to two now!

On the Aussie dollar its a good time to shop in USA of course but the Euro exchange rate naturally is the one that counts. Much more to area pricing policies than just those mid-market rates, naturally.

OK Got my M9 today (Boston). Nice to shoot 50mm and see its image size is back to what I am used to.

got my M9 on 10/4. 28mm used to be my favorite lens on the M8. I used the M9 last night and 28 is now too 'big' I think 50mm will be my favorite now. however, I think I might need to get 35 now

I moved to a 35 from a 28 in going from an M8 to a 9, so as to get more or less the same FOV. I also found myself getting a 75 to 'replace' my 50.

I was told today that the outlook for Australia is bad. The "small component" supply issue, as well as German unions not allowing staff to pull double shifts to ramp up production are slowing things down.

There are apparently 4 black bodies coming into Australia soon, but only 1 for Western Australia, and I want a grey body. Oh well, first grey body will be mine.

I sympathise :), but the numbers floating around are estimates by the dealers. Yes two major dealers told me today how many people are on their lists and how many cameras each they THINK they may get from the next shipment. It's not a favourable ratio!

The distributor is certainly not telling customers how many are arriving nor where each individual order is in the queue. I know . My dealer asked for me only this morning! Certainly they didn't get all of the stock they wanted initially. As far as we can tell here in this Forum, it's the same all around the globe of course.

I've only read that small component shortage theory here so I have no idea on that. My understanding is that the Solms folks ARE beavering away on double shifts now. No one could doubt that they want to get as many out the door as they can with the very successful initial demand.

Keep everything crossed! I think our headcount currently is one camera in Melbourne, one in Perth and one in Sydney. One camera per 7,333,333 citizens so far!

Perth has had a third of the national stock so far, Brisbane should be next :D

You would have thought in the current climate and with Christmas in the offing, Leica workers would be delighted to get the chance of some overtime. I understand that double shifts are not an option, in view of the skill levels required to assemble an M9 and the extensive training required. I hope Leica have a good water-tight penalty clause with the defaulting supplier if that is part of the cause.

I am told mine might be here on Friday or Saturday but that is along with fairies at the bottom of the garden, free beer and honest politicians.

Where did you hear of any union's impediment for Leica working on double shifts?

Holger1 - who actually lives very close to the Leica factory - says, they are actually working on double shift. http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m9-forum/100348-leica-short-working-week-3.html#post1058782

To further correct myself, I have heard from a much better source that double shifts are indeed being pulled to ramp up production. I have also been told that we should get some Grey bodies into Australia in November.

In the german part of this forum "derkonrad" posted a link to his blog:

Briefe an Konrad: Volle Auftragsbücher bei Leica in Portugal dank M9 (Zeitungsbericht "PUBLICO" vom 4.10.2009)

Konrad analyses a portugese newspaper article from "PUBLICO" about the Leica Factory in Villa Nova de Famalicão

(Northern Portugal)

mayor news

_ more than 6000 pre orders till now.

_ Leica Portugal highten his output from 40 raw-M9/ day to 50-60 raw-M9 /day

a game of chinese whispers! from Portugese to German to English...

I cant read the original, but the German says

3 months ago there was nothing much going on

600 M9s made so far

Orders for 6000 exist (but who knows if those are customer orders or orders Solms has placed on the Portugese factory)

The orders will take until January to complete, based on making 50 to 60 per day

Which suggests it has taken around 3 months to make the first 600, and will take 3 to 4 months to make the next 6000...

That's 9 months production just to fulfill back orders

No it´s only 3-4 Months . 6000 orders = 100 working days @ 60 M9s/day. There are about 25 working days a month - so it is about 4 months.

If you order now , you will get your M9 at january - that is not satisfying for some countries where the VAT is rising in 2010 .

Don't forget Christmas and Bank holidays which are numerous in the Peninsula. We usually take 22 days as average working days months. Add that any supply disruption and you are probably already in February.

Also factor in the possibility that any one individual has placed an order with more than one supplier so as to maximise the chances of getting one sooner. Gets one and promptly 2 or 3 other orders vanish.

My local dealer asked for a deposit for that very reason. I don't have a problem with that since I always like to support regional dealers. If we don't use them we'll end with very few centralised dealers, a long way from home, loose that personal touch and have to do mail order for everything.

Mine will come in due course, I still have my M8 to occupy me. My world won't stop spinning so long as Leica fairly distribute supplies rather than focus on very large outlets initially.
