Disappointed reading... M9 vs. M8

Dear all,

I am rather disappointed it appears that M8 users are being nasty and rather rude to those who are praising the M9. I really don't understand why, its a great camera!

From my reading, M9 people are excited with their new 'tools/toys' and are posting photos. They should be allowed to enjoy their new purchase. I too am a little jealous of the M9 but am certainly not in a position to purchase one at this moment, I think perhaps the rudeness is related to this same feeling?

Yes, the M8 is now out of date, but still an amazing camera. I love mine, as do thousands of others. It does exactly what I need from a digital RF.

Lets play nicely, and enjoy Leica photography - surely that is why we take the time to post and read this forum?

NB: This is just my little observation, I may be completely wrong, however I hope this thread doesn't cause a barrage of abusive comments from disgruntled M8 users.

Yes I think you are completely wrong.

I have not seen many post in this, the M9, forum that suggests M8 owner are bad mouthing M9 owners.

If I had the money to spare, and I mean to spare without giving anything else up, I's be buyiing a M9, maybe. But I am very happy with the DRF I have, the M8 classic, and have no problem with it capturing slightly less of a image for each given focal length lens.

Yes there will be those that either have never owned a Leica digital RF or sold the one they had that will feel cheated and bad mouth any and all cameras and users.

But that happens anyway with everything today.

I don't see where you are making this observation at all, if anything I've seen posts from M9 users stating their M9's aren't that much better than the M8. They have every right to make observations between the two and as far as the M9 getting the same amount of flak the M8 did when it came out that is totally off base. From what I see and read the M9 is being hailed as a milestone in cameras by a host of photographers many of them M8 users. If it bothers you that some M8 users have decided not to buy the M9 and discuss those reasons you are being dramatically over sensitive.

I read the op as a just condemnation of the primitive old=bad new=good type of thinking and an even more primitive reaction. Fortunately this has been very rare. The M9 is a more advanced camera than the M8, but the M8 is, in retrospect, so good and seminal that the difference can only be incremental.

As a M8 owner, I wish all the current and future owners enjoy their M9 in good health.

From what I have read, the M9 shall be a superlative tool for its users and they and Leica

need to be congratulated.

Strange, but I have not read any posts such as the ones the op refers to.

Regards and enjoy.

I'm one who decided to stick with the M8.2, for reasons that I've stated elsewhere, each related to MY preferences and style of shooting and printing. However, I can fully understand and appreciate that others, with different needs, will benefit greatly from an M9. And, frankly, I hope there are many more of them than people in my situation. This will help Leica succeed, which is good for all of us (and, secondarily, will bring down the cost of my potential spare M8.2!).

I haven't seen examples of rudeness cited by the OP. To the contrary, responses to my thread, as well as many other threads and comments here, seem to be very civil, with logical arguments regarding individual decisions. As we learn more, our views (including mine) may change.

And, we know that Leica, assuming success with its recent product introductions, will continue to change and improve its products. So, our wallets will surely empty over time....in a totally civil manner, of course.

Jeff

I can't say that I've seen a lot of nastly pro-M8 posts. On the contrary, the last six weeks has been full of posts awaiting something like the Second Coming. The M8/M8.2 have been thoroughly trashed by all and sundry as inadequate, defective, stop-gaps sold on the lie of upgradeability and producing images maked by various flaws even if the apparently much-hated filters are used.

Dear all,

I'm glad to be proved wrong, I hope there are good positive vibes from fellow forum members, however I feel giving examples of such posts would not ve fruitful, and simple target individuals. Maybe my observation was a reading of inbetween the lines.

For it is worth, I support merging the M8 and M9 forums. I think that the cameras have much more in common than they have as differences and that many technical discussions, in particular, will be relevant to owners of both: lenses, cyan drift, IR, focusing, accessories, etc.

Cheers,

Sean

I think the M8 and the M5 have a great deal in common...starting with the fact that they are probably the two most-reviled cameras Leica has ever made. I have an essay outlined in my mind about the various similarities...I think there are many. I hope that the M9 proves to be an M6 classic and not an M4-2!

Edit to add: I still have a chrome M5, recently CLA'd by Sherry Krauter.

Concur. I don't own an M9 and am not likely to in the short run, but I'm reading the M9 forum with interest.

I second Sean's (and others') suggestion to merge the M8 and M9 forums. The partly different solutions to the design challenges in the M9 as compared to the M8 will broaden the knowledge and experience of handling DRFs in general, which means in ways that will turn out to be useful for users of both cameras. At least that is my expectation after having read a number of reviews and discussions about the M9. There's two different perspectives available now. This will shed a more informative light on both models. Finally it's not an M9 vs. M8 thing. Rather it's digital rangefinder in general that has just reached the next level of excellence.

Cheers,

Norbert

I honestly fail to see how I can be called 'irresponsible' for my NOT posting those threads which appear to be bad mouthing the M9, just because they are M8 users. This thread was started to basically try and have the M8/M9 thread as one section, like many others have stated, these cameras are VERY similar.
