stunsworth Posted November 18, 2006 Share #1 Posted November 18, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm posting the shots that I didn't choose but came into the final cut. I'm sure I choose the wrong one :-) Mine was photograph F in the original contest. I was using a roll of Ilford XP2 in my R8 and 50mm Summicron. Like a good boy I exposed the film at ISO 200 as people recommend. Result a roll of overexposed film - as noticed by one of the voters. Another strange thing was noise in the shadows, this was something I wasn't expecting. Anyhow, enough of my whinging, onto the ones that didn't make the cut. This first one was on the shortlist for a long time. In the end it was a choice between this and the one that actually made it. Taken outside Shakespeare & Co on the left bank. The laid back lifestyle I guess :-) This was at the eastern end of Place Dauphine on Ile de la Cite. I've always struggled to get an interesting image in this delightful square. The location is beautiful, but I've always failed to capture the atmosphere. This was one of the last frames I took before going back to the pub. There was a demonstration (well this is Paris!) near Les Halles and I snatched a couple of frames before heading back. This one has grown on me since I made the original selection. On the north side of the Seine near Pont Neuf. I think this is one of the weaker alternatives, nothing that really grips the viewer, photography by numbers maybe. A birthday party on Pont des Arts. I should have been able to do much more with this scene, maybe next time :-)
Advertisement Posted November 18, 2006 Posted November 18, 2006 Hi stunsworth, Take a look here Steve Unsworth - my Challenge alternatives . I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
octo Posted November 18, 2006 Share #2 Posted November 18, 2006 Steve, The 'laid back' and 'demo' , as far as I am concerned, with a strong preference for the 'laid back' in the context of the Challenge.
MrEd Posted November 18, 2006 Share #3 Posted November 18, 2006 Hi Steve, Well composed shots. I like them. Thanks for sharing. Ed. .
kdemas Posted November 18, 2006 Share #4 Posted November 18, 2006 Steve, I was the killjoy that mentioned the shot you submitted being a bit "hot" but I still think you made the right choice for submission to the contest (it has that special "something"). I also like the 2nd photo listed here as well. Nice job with the entire competition and I still regret mis-timing my Paris visit by one week as I would have liked to have met and enjoyed the competition with all of you. Maybe next year. Well done! Kent
stunsworth Posted November 18, 2006 Author Share #5 Posted November 18, 2006 Thanks everyone. Kent, you weren't a killjoy, you were expressing exactly what I thought myself when I scanned the negatives. Let's just say I was a little disappointed. Tri-X or FP4 next time! Or M8 of course ;-)
elansprint72 Posted November 18, 2006 Share #6 Posted November 18, 2006 Steve, I shall comment, in person, tomorrow.
stunsworth Posted November 18, 2006 Author Share #7 Posted November 18, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Be as cruel as you want to be Pete, the exposure problem anoyed me more than I can say.
martinop Posted November 19, 2006 Share #8 Posted November 19, 2006 Interesting series. Like #1 and #2.
earleygallery Posted November 19, 2006 Share #9 Posted November 19, 2006 Steve, nice shots. I like the 1st, and the poster seller - with the guy sitting on the wall it makes it work. Ditto your comments on the XP2, which I was also using. Some of my images were very grainy. I exposed at 400 but with the lllf and guesstimate metering most of the time, that's very variable anyway! jmr Posted November 19, 2006 Share #11 Posted November 19, 2006 Steve, all good shots; "laid back" works for me.
chouhsin Posted November 19, 2006 Share #12 Posted November 19, 2006 Steve, For me, I prefer "lay back" then "Pont des Arts". Nothing to do with sex orientation tho. Hsin
ejd Posted November 19, 2006 Share #13 Posted November 19, 2006 Steve -- more great shots. I also like very much the lounging young man, and also the 2nd one above where your 'over exposure' seems to work very well on that wonderful sunlit facade, which really glows. Many thanks from me also for all your hard work on the 'challenge'. All the best, John
stunsworth Posted November 19, 2006 Author Share #14 Posted November 19, 2006 Thanks Ivan, H was James Earley and O was Philippe Otto. I've updated the pages to show who took what, and the equipment they used. John, there is a glow to the second one, but the shadows on the steps look terribly weak to me. Perhaps a bit of 'burning in' would help. As for all the effort, well truth be told there wasn't much really. I would be more than happy to host the images on my web site next year and to collate all the votes - Excel is pretty good for that kind of thing :-). Pascal was a great help in organising the evening meal.
stuny Posted November 20, 2006 Share #15 Posted November 20, 2006 Steve - All lovely, but most especially 2, followed by 3 & 4. Nice, lush tones, fine compositions, one of my favorite venues on six continents.
