GMB Posted August 31, 2009 Share #1 Posted August 31, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I may be completely wrong and I neither have nor do I claim to have any insider knowledge, but here is why I would bet on a new M9 being announced on 9 September and being available immediately or shortly thereafter: 1. It’s now official that Leica will announce new products on 9/9/09 at 9.00 am NY time. 2. 9/9 is a symbolic date. The only reason why Leica would pick this date is if it wants to announce a product where “9” is important, and that would be the M9. Leica also knows that its customers are hoping for a M9. So if it would announce a new product on 9/9 that is not the M9, Leica would disappoint and potentially annoy its customers. The would not want to do that. 3. If it is a M9 (as opposed to a M8.3), the difference must be significant enough to justify a new number. However, whatever the difference is, I think (and hope!) that there is not much room to further materially increase the price. I think there is a limit to what people are willing to pay for a digital rangefinder. Also, Leica would not want a M9 to compete with the S2. 4. The launch of the M9 is likely to kill M8 sales (unless the M9 is in a totally different price league or the improvements over the M8.2 are marginal). This means that it must be available soon/immediately. While Leica may not care about sales for a while, its dealers do care. In fact it made sense for Leica to announce the M8 and the S2 a few months in advance so that potential customers hold off buying competing products. However, this rational would not apply to a M9. These are my two cents. While I may be wrong, I hope that I am right as an improved M9 would be a great camera indeed. Speculations are useless but fun

giordano Posted August 31, 2009 Share #3 Posted August 31, 2009 2. 9/9 is a symbolic date. The only reason why Leica would pick this date is if it wants to announce a product where “9” is important, and that would be the M9. Nine is an auspicious number in China, Thailand and I don't know where else. So 9/9/9 sounds like a good day for any announcement - though obviously an M9 would be neat. Means the new camera is a film camera surely!

Chuck Albertson Posted August 31, 2009 Share #11 Posted August 31, 2009 You know, if you play "Strawberry Fields Forever" backwards, you'll hear one of the Beatles say "Paul is dead!" How much do you plan to bet?

adan Posted August 31, 2009 Share #15 Posted August 31, 2009 My only disagreement with the OP is that I'm sure Leica cares very strongly about sales right now, given their financial issues. I think Rudy Spiller has been pushing the company hard to get products to market, including acclerating development of a full-frame digital M. Speculations are useless but fun Perfectly logical : I add that if things really go like this, M8.2 can grab the record of the shortest lived M camera, or maybe the shortest lived of all Leica RF cameras (not counting the elusive IIId, maybe): collectors be aware !!! FrankA Posted September 1, 2009 Share #17 Posted September 1, 2009 If they are available shortly after 9.9 then there will be a huge supply of M8/M8.2's hitting the market and supply will drive resale value down. Already been seeing it happen. I for one am very curious to see "all" of the announcements since novice to pro will be addressed... should be fun
ceflynn Posted September 1, 2009 Share #18 Posted September 1, 2009 pascal_meheut, The theory that "Paul is dead" was thoroughly discredited at Brown University sometime around 1969 by at least two people who went on to make contributions to audio engineering, but I commend you on your astonishing recall! Bill W Posted September 1, 2009 Share #19 Posted September 1, 2009 If it all comes to fruition, it is one of the best marketing ploys lately given the world economic condition. An M9 announced on 9/9/2009 and at 9:00. What could go wrong. Do I want one.........well.........sure........but can I hide it from the wife...........HMMMM
