Will you still love me tomorrow?

I purchased my M8 in January to take advantage of the rebate, and netted out a bargain for a brand new camera (and 2 year warranty) with a noisy shutter, IR problems, inaccurate frame lines, slick cover and bulky battery charger (have I left anything out?).

Guess what? I love my basic M8! Mind you I'm a hobbyist and don't make my living with it, but in just a short 7 months I've shot some great images and actually had a blast learning the idiosyncrasies of a rangefinder (I've shot some pretty crappy and embarrassing images, too but at least it's digital). I haven't even picked up my Nikon DSLR since delivery of the M8. I have also thoroughly enjoyed this forum for the past year or so and it was very helpful in helping me on my decisions to purchase the M8 unmodified.

The past month the forum has been almost hijacked by all the speculation of the apparent M9 announcement on September 9th. There's still a chance that the M9 is quite a few months or over a year away. Also, it may be too big a chunk of money to really justify buying it immediately if it really does ship soon.

So...If the M9 is not announced or doesn't ship soon, or if you just don't want to come up with the $ for it, will you still love your M8, M8.2, or M8u? Or will you think of it as second class and continue to long for the M9? For my purposes I have no plans to purchase the M9 anytime in the near future. 10MP is plenty, The shutter is a non-issue (especially since the software upgrade) and I'm able to live with all the other various complaints well documented in the forum.

If the M9 doesn't come do you need more megapixels and FF so much that you'll have to go drink the cool-aid and purchase a Canon DSLR?

I will still love my M8 after September 9th and will still look forward to this wonderful Forum. Maybe it will somewhat return to normal. How about you guys and gals?

Just wondering... Hal

My guess, if an M9 digital is announced, the M8 will be history here, everyone will have to have an M9, turn up for a Leica meeting with an M8 and expect to be sitting on your own in the corner of the pub, the butt of everyone's jokes. Dare not post to the photo forum and admit it's taken with an M8 for fear of critical comment or worse, no comment.

This will last for about 6 months then you will start to read threads about M9s having to be returned to Solms for one reason or another, and the users exclaiming that they "used my M8 for the first time in ages and I forgot how much I like this camera" etc., which will mark the start of a renaissance of M8 use.

It's too much to ask for, but it would be nice if the moderators of these forums would simply create a new forum for the M9, and all those discussions about rumors, etc., could be moved there.

I bought an M8.2 and come here to learn more about it. I have no interest in a camera that I don't own and probably couldn't afford even if it did exist. With all the topics about rumors and speculation, it makes this place far less interesting to me.

(I assume that for others, all the M9 speculation is fascinating, and something they enjoy discussing. Maybe they'd be equally happy with a new home for those topics?)

Moderators do not have sufficient privileges to create or delete sub-sections. You need to PM "admin" with requests such as that.

My advice would be to just ignore any thread that relates to M9. What is it specifically that you want to discuss about your M8?

My suggestion would be to create an M9 sub-forum _if_ the M9 is announced on the 9th, and then eventually merge that with the M8 forum once the initial excitement had subsided. This would allow M8 users to continue discussing their camera without being drowned in a sea of M9 posts. Once things had settled down a little the two could then be merged as a single 'Digital Rangefinder' sub-forum.

This as I say being dependant on an M9 being announced by Leica.

The only downside I can see to this from Andreas' point of view is that all of the existing Google searches for the M8 would eventually point to a non-existant M8 sub-forum - and the M9 posts to another non-existant sub-forum. I have no idea how often Google refreshes it's database for individual sites, so don't know how long it would take to correct this

I disagree. It's in the nature of an equipment forum that when new cameras are released (or about to), that's what dominates the discussions. A split forum is in my opinion only needed when the user groups are largely different. I assume the M9 will have the same user group like the M8. Renaming the forum to "Digital Leica M" would gather the knowledge from these users in one place, making it easier to discuss and share experiences, and would be a better solution than splitting the forum.

Two words re: your request. Forget it.

There have been a number of us requesting the same thing and to also have a place to discuss issues re: skills and philosophical discussion other than the customer forum or barnacks barn or whatever its called. You are simply butting your head against the wall.

The M9 stuff is getting repetitive and at times ridiculous to be honest. Seems like a lot of technical speculation by folks who obviously don't know what they are talking about and it's become a bit of a bore, second only to folk's professed abilities to run Leica better. :o

Btw, I still love my M8.2 (my buddy just bought my M8 to contribute to the 24/1.4 OR M9 fund), but I agree that there's a fair amount of thread navigation required to pick up useful info. There's still plenty of M8 content here, and in particular in the archive, so maybe you want pick a point there and read forward? I'm sure once the M9 speculation frenzy is over there will be more informed commentary here - we can live in hope I guess.

As regards a dedicated M9 forum - I doubt people will be disciplined enough to use it anyway. It seems to have taken years for the digital/customer/M8 forums to be used properly so I'm a skeptic.

on B&H the leica M8 is going for $3,995... now forgive me, because I am just learning about the Leicas, but there was a rebate back in Feb that took off $1500?

so you paid $2,495 for a brand new M8?

you think they'll offer any more rebates???

I could afford that!

thanks!

Jack- The $1500 rebate ended January 31st. Before this the average price for a new M8 was around $5200 and the M8.2 was around $6200. This would net you out in the $3700 range (some a little more, some a little less) for a new M8 which if you wanted to buy it and pay for the upgrades at that time would equal about the same outlay as a new M8.2.

After the rebates were over the price of the remaining stock of M8s dropped to a retail of about $3995 or so. The rebates and deals were a little different in Europe but I think netted out to about the same outlay in Euros and Pounds.

Still a great little camera for $3995 new but you could probably pay a lot less now if you can find any new.

The sad thing is that there are too many people out there who have the available cash to buy the latest and in their eyes greatest camera - I always suspect they do it so they can show it off and thrive on the envy of others with smug satisfaction - it would be interesting to know on average how many images they shoot with it before disposing of it(before you ask, no this statement is not made out of jealousy as without these people, the secondhand market would die).

I only decided to go for the M8 in Mar this year and could only afford it by trading in my Canon gear and my M6TTL (still kept the 3 lenses though) - I had put it off for a while unsure as to whether I wanted a digital rangefinder in place of my full frame DSLR - I did and since "doing the deal", have not looked back.

It is like being back in my days working as a PJ when I carried an M rangefinder as back up and to use in "quiet" situations - I am loving it and find it has rejuvinated my photographic eye to make me think and consider rather than point the camera and let it do the work.

Will I trade my M8 for the expected and speculation filled replacement - NO, I could not afford to do this and secondly it would have to have a lot more than a full frame sensor that does not need filters to make me even consider it - if you add to this the potential for teething problems to emerge and Leica's time to fix them it does not for me justify scrimping, saving and trading in my current M8.

I will probably bide my time and wait for the inevitable problems to arise and fixes to be well established which may well be two cameras down the line and by then the M9 will be fairly readily available secondhand at sensible prices.

Time will tell but I do hope the S2 and next generation M digital will be a success or we may see the demise of Leica as a German owned and run company!

Some of us will stick to the M8. http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m8-forum/96345-september-9th-draws-near.html There is no shame in that for a genuine photographer but I get what you're saying and it probably does apply to some on this forum.

Nothing unique to Leica shooters in this statement. It's the way of the world and you could replace "camera" with car, house, boat, watch, handbag, jewelry, golf clubs, shotgun, laptop, wife/girlfriend, holiday destination etc etc.

No point worrying about it. Live your own life and be happy, safe in the knowledge that you aren't conforming to the aspirations of the ad men and marketing depts :D

Good idea otherwise the M8 sub-forum will get phagocyted the same way as dpr's Canon 1D/1Ds/5D forum by 5D2 posts

phagocyted? Damn, I had to go look that one up! :p

I don't think that splitting up M8 & M9 will serve any useful purpose. The concerns of both digital M's would mostly be the same and all that will end up happening is that general questions will end up being asked in one or other sub forum and never seen by the readers of the other one. I would assume that those wanting separate forums are likely M8 owners fed up with M9 chatter - just the folks who wouldn't visit the new forum.

We don't have separate forums for each model of film camera do we? Seems unnecessary. I see the value for Digitals M's vs S2 vs Digilux etc though.

Exactly like 1D/1Ds/5D users fed up with 5D2 chatter. To the point that i don't go there any more. Phagocyted i said.:p
