My 50mm f1.1 Nokton arrived on Saturday courtesy of Louis.

My first opportunity to use the lens was on Sunday when we went to the Fairford Steam Rally.

This was taken at f5.6 as I wanted to see how the lens was as a general purpose lens. It performed very nicely IMHO.

C&C welcome.

Cheers

I'm considering this lens as a future purchase so I tried a little extra post-processing and tweaking. I think it's a winner and a great value over the Noctilux, even if you have to take a few minutes to do some tweaking. Thank you for this series!

Part of the value of the lens is that it does not make contrasty images. It's able to fill out all the tones of what we used to call the Zone System, as the original version showed so well. From this standpoint, the revised version 'un-Noctiluxes' it. But to each his own $5K of taste.

Yes, that's indeed the charm of many very fast lenses opened up, the 50 1.2L Canon, the 80R lux, the 75 M Lux, and it looks like the Nokton too--in addition, of course, to the Noctilux itself.

I wonder what, really, the newest Nocti looks like (the 0.95?). I haven't seen enough wide-open shots to really know...

@ Mark--those are lovely shots. I have to say, though, that the first one exhibits some truly crazy bokeh... and while the Noctilux can get there (with point source lights especially) I don't usually see quite the busy-ness the Nokton is showing. It's interesting though, for sure!

Thanks everybody for your replies.

@Wilfredo - what did you do to the shot? I'd be interested to know...

@Jamie - with regard to the first shot, I agree the bokeh is a bit wild, though this is due in part to the b&w rendering - adjusting the colour sliders in Lightroom made for some interesting effects :) There were a lot of specular hightlights around, what with all of the shiny traction engines and other kit.

@Kirk - for just over £1k, this is a super lens IMHO. I'm delighted with it, though it takes a bit of work to get the best out of it. The bokeh isn't going to be to everyone's taste, though personally, I like the effects this lens creates.

All the best

At that price, you don't have to always shoot it wide open. I'm sure the bokeh gets better depending on the stop, distance, light, and person.

Only thing I don't like is the toning. Is that sepia?

Also, did you have to do much sharpening in post?

Congrats on the lens. Would like to see one in color.

Mark,

I used PSCS4 (also available is PSCS3) B&W filters to separate the tones, a little sharpening, and played with the levels. Then I added a tad of toning using color balance. I also softened the background to add a touch more bokeh. This is my basic procedure for all my B&W work, although sometimes I use Silver Efex Pro. My aim is always to separate the tones as in the 10 ZONES in Zone system photography. In my version it is probably most notable in the face.

For the price, I believe this lens will do just fine and then some. Most of us can't blow $10,000.00 on a lens so I am really happy there is an alternative to the Noctilux the rest of us can afford.

  • 7 months later...

Mark or anyone else with this lens, are you using a step down 58-55 ring to attach a Leica 55mm UVIR filter for use with the M8?

I've decided to take the plunge and I have just ordered the Nokton f/1.1 lens. I can't wait to slap it on the M8. This will be my first Nokton lens.

Wilfredo,

congratulations on getting the Nokton. I know you will enjoy it!

I don't use a 55mm filter - mine came with a 58mm B&W 486 IR cut filter. I don't see why the step-down ring shouldn't work though, as the risk of vignetting with the M8 would be negligible.

Have fun!

Best wishes

Mark,

I ordered a 58mm B+W IR/UV for use with the Nokton lens. Everything is in motion now so by this time next week, I should have the Bargain Noctilux in my hands (I prefer not calling it a Poor Man's Noctilux because even at the bargain price, it's still beyond the reach of most of the world's population). I'm very excited about this lens.

Cheers!

Wilfredo,

I look forward to seeing some shots. Another filter that I recently acquired was a 8x (3 stop) ND filter, as I have had problems with overexposure even at 1/8000 and ISO 160. I just need some sunshine to check this out:)

Best wishes

Mark
