moikle Posted August 20, 2009 Share #3 Posted August 20, 2009 I purchased a Novoflex unit. It works fine but the release pin (for removing the adaptor) is very small and fiddly and the end broke off very quickly. However, there is still sufficient pin left to make it usable. I would have returned it to B&H but I bought it while on holiday in NY. Mike
miami91 Posted August 20, 2009 Share #4 Posted August 20, 2009 Actually I meant to say "focus confirm." Wilfredo, I had this same discussion with some other forum members yesterday, and there seemed to be a consensus: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-s2-forum/95347-s2-leicas-list-sins-6.html#post1001781 Jeff. wilfredo Posted August 20, 2009 Author Share #5 Posted August 20, 2009 Jeff, Do you know anything about this adapter from "happypagehk" being wiggly? Thanks!
miami91 Posted August 20, 2009 Share #6 Posted August 20, 2009 Jeff, Do you know anything about this adapter from "happypagehk" being wiggly? Thanks! That's what I was curious about. A programmable focus confirmation chip and for under $100.00, when the Novoflex adapters (with no electronics) are close to $300.00, and the ones that Stephen Gandy/Cameraquest sells (also with no electronics) are $175.00. However, I assume since people are happy with them that they must be well-machined and fit snugly. You're a bit ahead of me in the process. I'm still deciding whether or not to buy the 5d2, although I'm about 80-90% decided that I will. However, having just spent about $12k on Leica R gear the past 3-4 months (2 brand new R9 bodies and 8 lenses, 6 of them brand new), I'm not sure I can face the wife with another camera purchase quite so soon. May need to wait till the holidays... If you buy the happypagehk, or any other adapter for that matter, be sure to post your thoughts. Jeff.
earleygallery Posted August 20, 2009 Share #7 Posted August 20, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I bought one on e bay for under £20 with focus confirmation. It fits fine and works fine, why pay more?
sdai Posted August 20, 2009 Share #8 Posted August 20, 2009 The 80 Summilux focus shifts badly on the Canons until you stop it down to f/2.8 or so, it doesn't play well on a DMR between f/1.4 and f/2 either. I eventually sold both my ROM and 3 CAM versions.
johnastovall Posted August 20, 2009 Share #9 Posted August 20, 2009 I've been using HappypageHK adapters for Olympus, Contax 21/2.8 and my R lenses and never had a problem with them not being tight and snug. The confirmation focus is fine and makes up for the crappy Canon 5D focusing screen. What ever happened to microprisms and fresnel screens? My Contarex had one and it is the finest focusing screen I ever used.

If so, I think this would do me fine with/without focus confirmation. Jeff.
lct Posted August 21, 2009 Share #11 Posted August 21, 2009 Cannot say for the 5D2 but the standard Canon focus screen of the 5D is not accurate enough for manual focus purpose. The Canon EE-S focus screen is better, specially with slow lenses. Vendors like Brightscreen and Haoda sell special microprism and/or split image screens for the 5D and the 5D2 as well. Mine is a Brightscreen one (about $160). With regard to AF confirm adapters i've bought mines at Enjoyyourcamera.com (AF-Hilfslicht-Adapter Leica R-Objektiv - Canon EOS kaufen im Enjoyyourcamera.com Shop) for both Leica and Zuiko lenses. They are rather expensive (EUR 80) but they are tested before sale so that there is no play between the lens and the adapter. Now play is easy to adjust with a mere screwdriver on most available adapters.

hamey Posted August 22, 2009 Share #16 Posted August 22, 2009 I have also bought a Leica R to Canon EOS adapter, tried it on the Canon 5D with the 100mm apo lens at the Camera exchange here in Melbourne and must say it worked great. One of my freinds called round to pick up some slides so I borrorewed his Canon 40D, for a few minutes fixed my 28-90 on it and tried it with a couple of shots, taken on JPEG. He told me to take it out and get some decent shots when we have time. Ken Both shots taken with the Canon 40D and the Leica 28-90mm Welcome, dear visitor! QUOTE] It may be useful to note that the Canon EOS 5D mkII has a close-up / manual focus aid built-in through the Live View facilty. If you select live view and press the blue labelled button which magnifies your shot images, it also gives up to 10 times magnification of your live view on screen which is easier than any viewfinder screen to use for a focus check. The magnified spot can be shifted around the screen using the joy stick button to ensure it magnifies your chosen spot(s) in the image. Live view also gives you a gridded screen if you choose. I guess the screens supplied are the ones which are most requested, the all-over multiprism screens gave good focus plane response, but gave little idea about out of best sharpness areas would appear. ( sorry I refuse to call it bokeh). Had a multiprism full screen on a T90 which was rarely my screen of choice. I was dubious about getting a Mk2 before I had it, I have no doubts now I have been using it for 6 months.
lct Posted August 28, 2009 Share #18 Posted August 28, 2009 Matter of tastes i guess, i don't like the 5D2 personally. I've used all Canon focus screens on the 5D and none of them gave me the same focussing accuracy as Brightscreen's so far. I mean with R lenses of course, but also with Zuiko 21/2 and 28/2. FWIW. This is a superb method for tripod work but not so easy or effective for hand held work and in bright light. On the adapter question I use Leitax conversions which are superbly made but they are conversions not adapters (and can be supplied with chips).
