What's Your M9 Confidence Level?

Considering the problems that plagued the M8 for several months after it was released, I'm wondering how many people will get the M9 as soon as it becomes available? Do you think Leica learned their lesson about releasing a camera before it had been fully tested and evaluated?

I pre-paid for my M8 six weeks before the dealer even had it in stock in Germany, so was one of the first to have one. But I went through four cameras in the first four months before getting one that worked (and it is still working). Due to that experience, I'll likely wait several months before purchasing the M9. What about you?

I need it by September 1st

seems unlikely :)

Still, I bought one of the first M8's in the UK, and it has been back to Solms twice, once for the recall, and once for the upgrade. It's frightened me with lockups once or twice, but, basically it, and it's companion (bought 6 months later) have performed perfectly . . . the only cause for concern is the black chrome on the black one . . . which is gradually changing to silver chrome.

If the M9 exists I'll buy one the first minute I can.

I have had a faulty M8.2 and an immediate replacement. The treatment I have received from my dealer (and Leica UK, of course!) means that I have already 'pre-ordered' an M9 in an unofficial way with my dealer. If it proves problematic I am confident I will be looked after in a similar way.

I received my M8 the first day it was released. I was pre-registered a few months in advance. As far as I remember there was a shortage of the M8 for the first two months. My M8 worked flawless from the first moment, except the banding effect that went away after Leica's recall to the CS.

Concerning the M9, I believe that the announcement will be in September, and I assume that the first cameras will be delivered within a few weeks. I've pre-registered for the M9. I'm pretty confident that there is an M9 in the pipeline, but unlike the S2, an early announcement of the M9 would have cannibalized the M8.2 sales. The M9 sales will be essential to compensate the high development costs of the S2.

That's why I think that Leica will soon deliver large amounts of M9's.

I agree, that's also my only concern. I love the black chrome of the M8 and that's why I never wanted to switch to the black painted M8.2.

I will wait to see how it does. One factor for those in the UK is that the VAT rate will go up from 15% towards the end of this year.

Jeff

Just back to what it was.

More worrying is the rumour that we could have a 20% VAT rate ere long

I think real life testing is a must. Remember that some famous "testers" tried the M8 and made indepth reviews.... and no one mentioned the Infra Red problem nore the green banding.... until the M8 hit the real market.

I think they lost quite a big chunk of credibility and I hope this time they will tell the full stroy or do deeper testing.

If Leica wasn't previously planning a release date in early September, I'll bet they are really scrambling to make that date now.

I most sincerely hope they're not. That was precisely the reason some people had problems with the M8. Let the development team dictate when the product is ready for release, not the marketing people.

If september 9th is the day, don't worry about development, it must have been done months ago when M9 was not even a rumour. Now they must be in full production for the D-Day.

i know, I was responding to Brent's suggestion that if it wasn't the date Leica might be tempted to get something ready by then to counteract the web rumours.
