A couple of days ago I photographed the Leica M8 White Edition for London dealers Red Dot Cameras. Here are a few of the images - hope you like them. I'm an M8 user myself, and thought the white version looked absolutely drop-dead gorgeous. You really have to see this camera, and hold one in your hands to appreciate how beautiful it is. Until I saw your pictures of the white edition, I had not noticed that this version is a M 8, not a M8.2 like the safari version. Leica must have a huge stock of M 8 cameras left on their shelves, since they use the technically outdated M 8 for their white edition instead of the more sophisticated M 8.2. Admittedly, there is some logic in preferring the more noisy and less discrete M 8 to the more discrete M 8.2 as the technical platform for these special edition cameras, since the whole idea of selling these special cameras at a very high and, some might say, unreasonable price, is to make the cameras as indiscrete and eye-catching as possible. I, therefore, wonder whether Leica will now introduce other similar limited edition M 8's in order to get rid of their entire stock of outdated M 8 cameras. A white version was an ideal start, since it would appeal to medical doctors, dentists etc., and, thus to a segment of well-paid buyers. Leica might also be able to get rid of a large number of M 8 cameras by painting their stock in other colours. How about a "Leica M 8 - Yacht Edition" in marine blue especially aimed at those with a yacht? There are, indeed, many possibilities to explore for Leica, so that they can get rid of their stock of M 8 cameras, using the same sales technique as they have used for many years, for instance also with the "M 6 TTL - the last 999". There will subsequently be an a-la-carte option to have your choice of past model shutter sounds generated instead, or possible to play a little tune instead... crazy frog anyone? The only thing I don't like about my M8 are the inaccurate frame lines. But even this is not a huge issue, as my main M8 lens is a Zeiss 40mm f2.8 Sonnar (the lens that came with the Rollei RF film rangefinder), which I use with a 35mm screw-to-M adaptor. This lens - due to the generous framing of the M8 - gives an angle of view very close to that of the 35mm brightline. The M8's higher-speed shutter, with it's faster flash sync, is (for me) preferable to the M8.2's slower but quieter shutter. J M Hughes No offence, J.M., I have myself kept one M 8 in order to take advantage of the 1/8000 shutter speed together with fast lenses, which I miss on my M 8.2. But I still regard the M 8.2 as more sophisticated and would prefer having two M 8.2's with 1/8000 as their fastest speed and with the improved viewfinder. I too would love to have that lens to grace my chrome M8. (I quite like the white camera too, but I'm not sure how long it would stay looking that nice.) I have been in the shop when you did those and yes you are right the white edition is gorgeous and looks much better then I imagined after seeing the first images of it .
