When I compare this thread and the thread: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-s2-forum/66738-i-want-s2-anybody-else-gonna.html I see in this thread more pros in the reaction. I see much more postive votes in a shorter time. This means to me in the classical customer base a bigger marked can be found for a sucsessor of the R system then for the S system.

So the choice for the new S system can only sucessful when more new customers can be attracted to the new system.

I new that there are only Leica users in this forum, but you can see not so many will follow the way to the S system.

When you take into account that there must be win more new customers then old R users are lost, I am very sceptical about the descision to prefer the S over the R system.

Regards,

Bernd.

The results of this comparison have little to do with the market for photographic equipment in general, primarily because participants in this forum are mostly existing Leica users. The point of the S2 isn't to satisfy an existing market niche, it's to create a new one. Personally I'd rather have an R10 than an S2 but being a Leica-R user I'm biased.

Hi Bernd.

I agree with you. I'm sure that a factor in Leica's prioritising in favour of the S system was that an R10 would have been all many would have needed/wanted, hence detracting from potential S body and lens sales.

It will be an amazing system - and hard to resist. It might be a masterstroke. If the greatest economic downturn in 80 years doesn't turn it into a disaster.

After > 25 years with (roughly) 85% RF Leicas, 10% MF, and a "symbolic" 5% (or probably less) with SLR (just to taste my collectible Contarex set), it would be a difficult choice... but surely, depending on which kind of system it could have been, I would have seriously taken it in consideration, even if this could have meant a massive sell-off of RF glass to finance the DSLR set...

This just seems so backward from a business and marketing perspective. Abandoning a loyal, albeit dwindling, customer base for a hopeful footprint in a new area? Seems odd.

The idea behind the S2 wasn't to abandon an existing market. It was to augment the customer base. Dropping the R line was not part if the original plan.

Can we count this as a "yes"? :)

Could hardly have the inimitable shutter noise of the Contarex though...

Yes, of course!

I own 11 R lenses from 21mm to 560mm. Now I will have to sell them and go over to N or C.

Lets make a count ...

Would you have bought an R10, in the form of an R9 with a full frame sensor?

For me - Yes. So that's 1.

Yes, depending on price.

But, I still think that a successful S2 will eventually lead to an R (or substitute R-type) solution...call it S1, as others suggest. If that's true, though, might be too late and a lot of damage will have been done for Leica faithful in the meantime.

I stopped wishing for one. Use my Canon 5D for my R lenses. Since Leica came out to say that there will be a mean for Leica R users to be able to use their lenses. I hope they will make that happen in an upcoming M9. See my thread above...:)

Just as a "maybe"... :)... emotionally speaking, I'm so tied with RF photo (and Leica M handling & feel) that it would have been something REALLY special... given my attitudes (and my not-frequent-shooter type) is difficult I decide to use two different systems... buiyng the theoretical "R10" would mean, to me, abandon the RF usage and keeping some old Leica RF gear just for sentiment... :o

I was already to buy into the R10 subject to the usual price/spec issues. I invested heavily into the R9/DMR and 6 R lenses and I was ready to do it again this time with the AF R10 system (getting older!).

Now I am very happily wedded to another full frame DSLR system with great lenses....and not C or N either!

It is a shame for Leica and their very loyal R system user base to see the end of the R system. But cheer up there are very, very excellent alternative DSLR systems to try out, you might be very surprised too at the image quality. One good thing, the insurance premiums are much lower!!
