it's usually people that can't afford it will trash it.

The obtuseness, the gross offensive stupidity of a statement that equates good taste purely with purchasing power... I don't really have the words.

Sometimes the insane and pitiful mess that the American economy is currently in makes perfect sense: consumerist values taken to their (il)logical conclusion.

Yesterday, our first shipment of the M8 White Edition Sets came in. I took a few minutes to photograph everything and put it up my blog. Check it out if you so desire.

BTW, photographing a white camera on a high-key white product table isn't as easy as it looks. :) Enjoy.

David

Unfortunately for David and the rest of us, this thread has meandered down a road of recrimination and goodness knows what. A tempest in a teapot.

Leave the camera alone...in whatever colour it may be.

Thanks,. Doug

A friend was in middle management for Chrysler Corp. One day, while in his boss' office he glanced out the window to the parking spot reserved for his boss. In that spot was a particularly hideous car with a paint color that only a mother could love. The exterior color was made even worse by a custom interior with an equally dreadful color scheme.

My friend and all management were issued 'company cars' to use for some months after which they would be sold at reduced prices. So, the boss' car was, indeed, a company car that would be offered for sale to the public later on.

My friend's question to his boss was, "who in the world is going to buy that car after you're finished with it?" The boss looked over and said, "Bill, there's an a$$ for every seat"!.

Yep and look at how well they're doing now!

It does strike me as odd that people who wax lyrical over the kudos of a brassing black paint M baulk at the idea of a white camera.

Rule 1. Leica's must be chrome or black (paint or chrome).

Rules are there to be broken aren't they? :)

The vindication of this edition will be the simple fact of whether it sells or not.

I believe that Henry Ford was quoted as saying that "Any customer can have a car painted any color that he wants so long as it is black"...

He was very shortly almost put out of business by his competition...

Not really. It's generally believed that Henry Ford made this statement in 1909, just when the "T" sales really began to take off. The Model T lasted until 1927 when it was then replaced by the Model A.

To stay on topic, I like the white M8.

... only takes a little white paint on a camera to show how conservative and resistant to change that most photographers really are LOL

I wonder how long the queues of plumbers in front of hardware shops would get should they start selling pink spanners or white plumber's friends.

How do we know if it's "most photographers" who scorn the minority colorings?

A very silly camera IMHO. You can't even pretend this one has practical aspects, unlike most other special editions, which perform the same as stanadard models. This one has lens lettering you can't see, looks silly and to top it all, is the old M8 (I assume), rather than the superior 8.2 gizmos. This is a fantastic waste of money that you cannot even claim performs as per the latest 8.2, yet costs a lot more. People obviously like this camera, but it leaves me scratching my head.

Wouldnt worry me. Potential I reckon. I think I would read Norton and aftermarket some black griptac on it and black lenses. Yea I would go that, it would be sweet...if other things about the M8 didnt trouble me. Gee the venom in here.

and the Leica M8 WE has it

I like the way it looks & would love seeing a photograph with Paris Hilton using one, preferably in her knickers

I wouldn't want one over my chrome, which is starting to show some brassing, which I love

I think the black dial should have been replaced by a white one however

I suspect there exists some white material that would not turn yellow

as odd as this may sound, I believe the choice to use black for the buttons & dial was likely on a costs basis rather than for aesthetic or practical reasons

I

snip

As for white plastic turning yellow... some years ago a friend of mine bought a brand new white Corvette. After about a year he parked it next to a new one and noticed that his car looked slightly yellow in comparison. After getting no satisfaction from his dealer, he called the wife of the CEO of General Motors at her home and explained his displeasure with the car. A few days later two people from GM showed up and bought his car for what he paid for it.

maybe this is why my country has gone into deeper debt bailing out this company

I still prefer black for my Leicas but have to admit I kind of like the white edition and regardless of its color I'm sure still takes pictures like a Leica. Someone questioned Leicas core values in the issuance of this camera but Leica has a history of producing specialty cameras in large and small runs. At one point any individual or group of individuals could have a specialty camera produced in any combination of finishes and maybe you can still do that through the Leica boutique so with a history of specialty production isn't that a part of Leicas core values? I think Leica, like any company in a world economy in meltdown, needs to make money and if this camera sells out and accomplishes that then who cares if it's white.

Photographers often view themselves as open-minded individuals... willing to embrace new ideas and ready to experiment....But it only takes a little white paint on a camera to show how conservative and resistant to change that most photographers really are LOL

I guess we cannot label a photographer conservative or non-embracing new ideas just because he happens not able to accept a white m8 (or hate it). To a lot of photo-shooting hobbyists, camera is only a tool, and nothing more than that. Most of fashion designers dress rather basic. Many home designers seldom have designers' furniture at their homes...

That said, one has freeedom to choose a basic-look tool or a fancy one that he/she applauses and attracts layman at the same time.

The photos will look identical, there's nothing that the M8.2 does that the M8 doesn't image wise (same sensor, same resolution etc etc).

Indeed. There is nothing much wrong with an M8 compared to the M8.2, in fact I prefer the M8 as it has 1/8000 and does not have S(uperfluous) mode.

If Leica still offers a la carte film M's then running a series of 250 white M8s sounds perfectly OK to me. Moreover we have had plenty of people using weird colored leather i.s.o. the standard offering.

I would expect Leica owners being prepared to pay such large amounts of money for glassware (Noctilux etc.) is a larger cause for scorn and ridicule with the outside world than paying for a limited series edition.

Given the choice I might have bought one, meanwile I will suffer using my silver M8:D
