WATE and M8

I use a WATE on an M8. I have just realised that the focal length selection on the M8 is only activated if the lens dection is set to "ON + UV / IR". I do not have an IR filter fitted to the WATE so I select lens detection "ON", but the 16mm, 18mm and 21mm options are not displayed. Does this mean that the M8 does not need to know what focal length I have set on the lens? The lens infomation is not included in the EXIF either. I would have thought that the camera would require edge / corner tweaks irrespective of the lens having a filter fitted or not.

If anybody has any thoughts I would like the know them.

regards

- This is quite normal and how it is supposed to be.

Jaap,

I try to use the WATE without the filter as often as possible. The filter is a huge thing. Nor does it contribute to higher contrast, without a sun shade.

Is it different for the 2nd version? I had the 1st version and had normal filter on.

Just out of curiosity: Why should you not use an IR filter? It saves you a lot of grief.

I don't like the Leica filter solution for the WATE. I must admit that I have not yet seen any IR issues using this lens. If you check the link to a previous thread you will see an example taken with an M8, 90 APO with a Leica IR filter attached. Notice the magenta coloured lens, and if you look really closely the controls / rewind on the top plate also have a slight tinge. The images that are colour correct were taken with the DMR. I did send details of this to Leica, but they put it down to the angle that the image was taken. :-) Interesting. My DMR has no angle issues.

I have also noticed that my M8 is now producing frequent lines across the image. I know where my M8 will spend this summer holiday. Anybody got a mint condition DMR for sale? I require a spare.

I use the WATE with the excellent Milich adapter for UV/IR filter. This is a huge improvement over the massive Leica offering and allows you to use both the filter and the stock lens hood together.

A search of the forum archive will bring up pictures & links.

And there is no vignetting...?

And there is no vignetting...?

No vignetting and no peep hole viewing through the filter or significant ingress into the viewfinder view either. Also no path for dust or reflections behind the filter although reflection from the lens to filter is still a potential issue in bright light, just like with all UV/IR filters.

That is: although reflection from the white lettering on the front end of the lens to filter etc.

Rare, but it does happen in bright light/overexposed pictures.

OK, why overexpose? To make a HDR series!

No doubt this happens too - although the more general case is I believe just down to simple bright lights reflecting off the lens back to the filter inside coating and then back into the lens. On the relatively rare situations when I've seen this it happens in night shots although I have no doubt that there are other scenarios too. It's one of the pain in the rear aspects of UV/IR filter usage.
