Another little secret is that the Rokkor-M 40/2 for Minolta CLE is as good as the Summicron-C.

I owned the Rokkor-M 40mm CLE for a while and compared it to my Summicron 35 v3 after the Rokkor-M got a CLA. The Rokkor is a good lens but it's not as good as the Summicron 35. The Summicron has better sharpness (especially in the corners), better colors and less aberrations. You can find three crops from my test shots here. Yes, that comparison is not for scientific applications, but it sums up my experience with both lenses pretty good.

I have been told that the 40mm Summicron-C is on par with the v3 Summicron 35, but I can't verify that. But that would make the Summicron-C superior to the CLE. Anyone owns both 40mm lenses and could compare them?

I have no experience with the 35/2 v3. I own both Summicron-C 40/2 and M-Rokkor 40/2 for CLE and can't seem to perceive significant differences i must say. I did side by side comparos ten years ago on the LUF but this old thread is lost unfortunately and i am too lazy to redo it sorry.

My V1 8 element summicron beats all 3 of my 40mm C Leica lenses- and the Minolta one! (i stocked up when they were cheap)...

Now my V2 summicron is very close to the 40 in size and no slouch either:

Let's face it - they're all good!

I have a 40 CLE that I use when hiking or on my bike. Before I got a 35luxASPH (preFLE) it was my most used lens on M9. Out of focus highlights can appear double-edged at wide apertures, otherwise absolutely nothing to complain about. Very sharp from f/2.8 onwards. Once prices went up though it may be better just to get a genuine 35mm for correct frame line coverage at close distances.

Works fine for me. I do the same on my 90/4 macro. No problem at all. Only issue with the 40/2 is the thread pitch of the lens as mentioned above.

Yes, with a single weak point one could still handle perhaps.
But with two?
First, a little turned down E39 filter on the Summicron-C 2.0-40mm and secondly on this filter the equally little screwed rubber lens hood?
That would be much too shaky for me and I would certainly lose it during the first walk outside.

And at a closing cap finally one should not even think about it.

+1

That fight has been done to death. The differences are down to individual copies. I paid 325 recently for a fine M-Rokkor. 40.5 filter with normal threads is pretty nice.

But I would expect the 35/cron to beat it.

Makes me wonder how i can be so stupid to have ideas like that.

Well, not everyone is technically so well skilled as you and maybe my required levels of ruggedness on M equipment outdoors are slightly higher.
Your DIY instruction is really thought through very well and I would show it my optician if I again need a UV / IR filter in the rare measure for another Summicron-C 2.0-40mm.
But once you've seen a ruined Summicron-C, in which a non-matching filter had been  screwed in, one wishes this small excellent lens would have been treated better.
Or perhaps the previous owner wanted never to screw off this filter from his Summicron-C.
However, when unsuccessful attempting to unscrew this false but extremely sessile filter the Summicron-C had been broken into two parts.
What a pity.
