PasMichiel Posted April 14, 2009 Share #1 Posted April 14, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) This is an difficult decision for me. By selling and buying I have made my collection complete. I started with a CL. Then I sold that and bought a R4 Chorme with the 50mm and the 135mm. But that was stolen in 2000. So I had to safe first and bought a R5 with an 28-70mm. Not the perfect lens but in the years I bought the 28, the 60, the 135 and the 180. All 2.8. Then a year later I bought a 50mm 1.4 (old version). After that I had to make an hard decision as well. I saw a R8 for a nice price, but I didn’t have the money for it. So I sold the R5 with the 50mm 1.4. I had nothing. No body no more!! But I was very pleased because the R8 wasn’t sold jet. Now I have the same difficult decision. I saw a R8 with DMR. But again no money. Should I sell my R8 with the 28 and the 60 and the 135 and the 180 and the macro adapter and the extender 2x? Just to keep the 28-70 again with the Metz. And hope it will not be sold when I can buy it.

enboe Posted April 14, 2009 Share #2 Posted April 14, 2009 After absorbing thousands of dollars in losses over the years, I now use a different approach. I only sell gear when I know I will never be interested in using it again. Never, ever sell gear to raise cash to buy gear. In the current market, you'll get 25-50% of what it will cost to replace later when you decide you want it. The lenses are good, solid items that will last a lifetime. Keep them. There are thousands of DMRs out there, and one will be available when you have the money saved up. Just my opinion. Eric

An DMR in good condition for a decent price is a rare find nowadays, most current owners are not selling. The 28-70 is an excellent start. maybe not the most superb lens in the R lineup, but plenty good and the right focal length for the DMR. Or just buy the thing on your credit card and sell the other R* body later (the lenses I would try to hang on to..) The DMR is arguably the best 135 class camera you can buy, maybe only beatable by the 1DsIII with Leica adapter....And the ergonomics of the DMR are unmatched. NZDavid Posted April 15, 2009 Share #4 Posted April 15, 2009 Why not wait for the R10?
PasMichiel Posted April 15, 2009 Author Share #5 Posted April 15, 2009 Thanks for all the replies. Eric you're right. It's the wrong way to sell stuff you still like to use. Jaap I agree the line up with the 28 60 135 180 (with extender 2x: 270 and 360) is perfect. Why sell for a stupid gadget a DMR . The only reason I have the 28-70 is because I changed a lot with the 28 and 60. Also all the fixed focal point lenses are 3Cam no ROM and the 28-70 is. But the 28-70 starts with f/3.5 so I still often use fixed focal point lenses. I don't buy with creditcards. I buy what I can afford. Oh and David. I think the R10 will never come or I have to wait for a very long time. 23th of March 2009 Leica noticed that they stopped with the R series because of the S2 (Leica Camera AG - Leica cease production of R9 and R lenses). They want to focus on that series, I think. It has 37,5Megapixel and ROM with autofocus lenses. I think the R-series will never compete that. Or they have to modify a lot which cost a lot of engineering.
wizard Posted April 15, 2009 Share #6 Posted April 15, 2009 I don't buy with creditcards. I buy what I can afford. That is a VERY sensible approach. Stay with it, keeps you out of trouble. My question would be, why are you considering to buy into digital (DMR) at all? Are you dissatisfied with your results on film? If not, just keep on going. Film is still readily available and probably cheaper than ever before. Also, film quality is definitely higher than ever before. While the DMR is an impressive piece of technology and the results are impressive, too, its weight combined with an R8/R9 is also impressive and I decided I don't need it myself (I am not a pro). If you are interested in digital equipment, wait for the R10, it will be released sooner or later and will most likely accept your current lenses (in manual mode, but that's no different from using them on an R8/R9 body with or without DMR). Cheers, Andy

Cheers, Andy I even have my own darkroom, but sometimes it's faster and easier. I am thinking about having an analog R8 and a R8/9 with DMR along with several lenses. And the weight? Yes, it's heavy. But I hate the R8 with a standard lens and a Metz 54MZ-3 on it when I use the wire belt. It tumbles forwards. I have it with the 28, the 60mm and the 28-70. I hate that about the R8. I can imagine it with the 135 and 180mm, but not with those lighter lenses. Maybe a motordrive or an DMR wil help.
lct Posted April 15, 2009 Share #8 Posted April 15, 2009 My grand mother said: Never sell a Leica lens. Translation: so you can sell a Sigma/Kyocera Seriously i would not sell anything, wait for the R10 and decide if you buy the latter or a most probaly cheaper then DMR. PasMichiel Posted April 15, 2009 Author Share #9 Posted April 15, 2009 you're grand mother was right. I really don't know what kept me by thinking such thing. I won't sell anything, my treasure... I just keep saving and buy another R8/R9 with DMR or wait for a Leica for the R lenses (R10?)
NZDavid Posted April 16, 2009 Share #10 Posted April 16, 2009 The R10 is definitely coming according to Leica's Maike Harberts. See: WEBB-TV: Leica S2 and R10
PasMichiel Posted April 16, 2009 Author Share #11 Posted April 16, 2009 That's first time I hear someone from Leica still mentioned it. Nice.

PasMichel, Yes, I made a confusion with this thread : http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m8-forum/83182-tripod-fell-m8-2.html#post874834 it speaks about the "fall" and "help" of camera I can ask a moderator to remove it if you want Sorry
