thighslapper Posted December 12, 2014 Share #14761 Posted December 12, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) correct ..... Foxton Locks in Leicestershire ...... there are two sets of 5 staircase locks .... the largest grouping of these unusual locks in the UK canal system ....... they differ from ordinary canal locks in that the gates from one open directly to the next ....with the result that there are more locks over a shorter distance (ie steeper slope) but at the expense of using a lot more water. at Foxton this bottleneck was partly overcome by building an 'inclined plane' adjacent to this where canal boats went into caissons full of water and then went down the slope on rails ..... usually paired so that one went up when one went down .... almost balanced so the power needed to lift was minimal. Most of this has gone at foxton but the interesting museum has models of how it worked. Nice walks around here..... and two good pubs at the bottom of the locks .... well worth a trip. Your turn Tony .....

dem331 Posted December 19, 2014 Share #14778 Posted December 19, 2014 Well I will have a go, although I may be totally off track. British Isles I would say because of the building on the right. Renaissnace, The windows look Tudor, also the benches tipically British. The war memorial on the left with the MCMXIV also suggests one of the "victorious" nations. It throws me off a bit because the gold in the windows, looks more Eastern, but I guess that is just the design that was in fashion after WWI. The tower in the middle looks more northen European. Scotland my first guess, if I am allowed a second, Belgium.
Jim-St Posted December 19, 2014 Share #14779 Posted December 19, 2014 Your guess is correct, Enrique: Scotland it is. The age of the buildings is unclear - possibly some date from16th or 17th century. The war memorial is of course much more recent (unveiled 1922) Now, can you provide a more precise location?
