india Posted January 14, 2009 Share #1 Posted January 14, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Whilst talking to my local leica dealer; He gave me a small book on the new S2, and then started to tell me the price if I wanted to place a order. I was shocked to find out that the S2 will be about 15000€ sold with a lens? which of coures makes this camera at arms reach!!!
Advertisement Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 Hi india, Take a look here price of the new S2. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted January 14, 2009 Share #2 Posted January 14, 2009 15000 including lens? I cannot believe that, that would be cheap. If that price is correct, it is an instant winner.
bscott Posted January 14, 2009 Share #3 Posted January 14, 2009 Don't forget about a backup S2
Michael-IIIf Posted January 14, 2009 Share #4 Posted January 14, 2009 I'm waiting for the S2.2 myself. It'll probably be EUR €20,000 but the shutter will sound nicer.

canlogic Posted January 14, 2009 Share #6 Posted January 14, 2009 If it is true that Canon has just bought the Contax assembly line and the rights to zeiss lenses it may mean a further reduction in price overall on MF equipment.
india Posted January 14, 2009 Author Share #7 Posted January 14, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) At first leica wanted to sell the S2 @ 30000€. But my dealer told me that him and six other dealers where asked to try out the new S2, and give their thoughts! Afterwards leica had announced the price; the six dalers all said that it was to expensive, leica then asked "at what price do you think is correct" After giving much thought they replied "15000€"
stunsworth Posted January 14, 2009 Share #8 Posted January 14, 2009 Just a pity they didn't suggest 5000 Euros
sdai Posted January 14, 2009 Share #9 Posted January 14, 2009 It's just getting too funny, if the dealers can truly tell Leica what the market's thought about their products' worth, or, if Leica really cares about what people think about their price, they were not selling the M8 dot 2 at 6000 dollars a pop now. Why don't they just put a S2 on ebay, start a bidding war from $1? I'm in for the opening bid.
stunsworth Posted January 14, 2009 Share #10 Posted January 14, 2009 Sdai, maybe, just maybe, Leica didn't decide on the pricing structure for the s2 and lenses by asking a single French provincial dealer what price they ought to sell them for. Maybe, just possibly, the dealer - or original poster is 'winding people up' as we say in the UK. Just a thought.
india Posted January 14, 2009 Author Share #11 Posted January 14, 2009 Hi steve;the French provincial dealer address is MURO Photographie & Galerie SARL CENTRE CONSEIL LEICA diplômé - EXCLUSIF LEICA - Summilux - Centres Conseil Leica - MURO Photographie & Galerie SARL I can tell you this is not a wind up, and also the Muro family have strong links with Leica; Take a look at their web site david
like_no_other Posted January 14, 2009 Share #12 Posted January 14, 2009 They gave you a price, asked for your order and couldn't tell if and what lens is included? Did you pay upfront to delivery?
india Posted January 14, 2009 Author Share #13 Posted January 14, 2009 No I didn"t pay upfront, leica have not set the final price on the S2, nor have they deceided on the lens. One thing that I know is that my dealer has a very strong conection at leica, any new products that are put on the market, he is given priority. Their are some details on lens if you go to this cite; in a sub folder you will find all of the S2 lens and tech details. good luck david LEICA S

I am a little confused .. but that is not new.. if they have not determined a final price then this is still just speculating.. as we did this just prior to photokina..I would like to hear from other dealers on this side of the water..or better yet from leica .. like_no_other Posted January 14, 2009 Share #15 Posted January 14, 2009 Thanks for the link. I think it's possible that these pricing discussions between dealers and Leica are one factor of several to decide the final price. I hope that 15k are not too far below Leicas costs for S2. sdai Posted January 14, 2009 Share #16 Posted January 14, 2009 Please disregard my previous note, folks. If 15000 Euros incl. a kit lens is true, then it's a good price and stays pretty much in line with other cameras in this class. But I've heard before that the S2 will be marketed through Phase One's channels so now why it's switching back to Leica's conventional dealers? Channel conflicts of course, jealous Leica dealers, ... they want the S2 immediately.
sdai Posted January 15, 2009 Share #18 Posted January 15, 2009 I hope that 15k are not too far below Leicas costs for S2. The overheads in the S2 can be covered by the R10 or M9 buyers ... that being said, if the darned camera is built in Japan, they couldn't have made tons of money for selling at that price. earleygallery Posted January 15, 2009 Share #19 Posted January 15, 2009 The price will be whatever the price will be. Leica are going for the fashion/wedding/advertising pro market with the S2 and I'm sure they know that the - eventual - price must be comparable with other pro MF systems. Jamie Roberts Posted January 15, 2009 Share #20 Posted January 15, 2009 15K Euros is way out of any wedding photography market on the planet. Mamiya isn't even selling into that market and they're under 10K dollars for a kit.
