wparsonsgisnet Posted December 3, 2008 Share #1 Posted December 3, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) I started a thread about my first b/w printing -- but it got shanghai'd to the photo forum. I've been trying to get to b/w workflow for a couple of years, now. So, here's a commercial for Silver Efex Pro. This sw was recommended in that thread and I tried it and then bot it. It's terrific. I am now really pleased with my b/w chain. M8 to C1 to TIFF. PSCS3 with Silver-Efex-Pro Filter to jpg, I think. QTP (front end to Harrington's QUAD rip) using profiles from InkJetMall (Jon Cone) to an Epson 1400 with Cone's K6 inks and CIS. Take it from me, it does not pay to be a Virgo in this business. I'm losing sleep in case I forget to agitate the K6 inks each weekend to keep them from settling in the bottles. It's Cone's fault that I'm here because he sent one of his periodic newsletters to me touting the 1400 and Epson's closeout sale, as well as offering a discount on his CIS and K6 combo. Man, do you know how MUCH the 13x19 Photo Rag paper costs?!! $4 a sheet. I'm both very pleased and being very careful. The results are very pleasing. Highly recommended. Advertisement Posted December 3, 2008 Posted December 3, 2008 Hi wparsonsgisnet, Take a look here Praise for Silver Efex Pro. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
tollie Posted December 4, 2008 Share #2 Posted December 4, 2008 Bill, You live up in Jon's area... did you take any of his workshops? If so would you care to comment on your experience? Thanks... I am looking this year to become a better printer... (along with my ongoing resolve to become a better photographer).
wparsonsgisnet Posted December 4, 2008 Author Share #3 Posted December 4, 2008 Todd, I'm just near Boston. He's up theya (Northern accent, y'know). I have your same 2 goals. I have not taken any of his workshops and wish I might have. It's on the list of things to do when my ship comes in, along with acquiring a 21mm 'lux first. I do like his inks, tho. I'm still figuring out how to do things, but the results from the 1400, K6 piezo stuff, Silver Efex pro, and QTR are already pleasing. I'm gonna try some of the Harmon fiber gloss that was recommended in the M8 forum (post #27) http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m8-forum/71205-scanning-vs-digital-caputre-2.html I saw some prints that a friend made but haven't gotten to the paper yet. tollie Posted December 4, 2008 Share #4 Posted December 4, 2008 Bill, Thanks for the reply. The workshop is pricey and the travel for me would be really stiff... but I wonder if in the long run it might be worth it to get a solid foundation and some direction. Though you can learn alot form the web and your flow seems sound. To next year...
wparsonsgisnet Posted December 4, 2008 Author Share #5 Posted December 4, 2008 I've been looking around and Cone doesn't have a profile for his K6 (1400) ink set and any Harman paper, and Harman doesn't have a proflle for a QUAD-style printer. Nuts.
tollie Posted December 5, 2008 Share #6 Posted December 5, 2008 I've seen that the next jump up is the R1900 (the R1800) has been discontinued. It seems to be a bit faster than the 1400 and uses an 8 ink set. In your thinking the difference between a 6 and 8 ink set was not worth the difference in price, I assume. The Harman paper seems wonderful. I like the tray size for both printers. A bit larger than my usual 8 x 10. I would still send my large prints... 20 x 24 to a print house. I just can't justify the cost of a really large format printer.
wparsonsgisnet Posted December 5, 2008 Author Share #7 Posted December 5, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Todd, I chose the 1400 on purpose, because Cone said that the ink set he developed for it is the best he's done. He touts the 1.5 picoliter droplet size and says he built a special set of apps just for this printer. The output looks great. I am no longer looking at Harman for a couple of reasons. The first has to do with an article in yesterday's NY times about products with nano particles in them. The article says that man-made particles this size enter the body because of their small size and that they are definitely not good for you. And, as it happens, there is no profile for the 1400 Cone-K6 combo. I was hunting around for a profile yesterday and got home to find my wife telling me about the nano-engineered products. Guess I'll stick with matte for the time being. I'm using the Hahn. photo rag and liking the archival rating and the quality of the output.
