robsteve Posted October 9, 2006 Share #1 Posted October 9, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) After all this talk about the Noctilux, I decided to load some film in my M7 and shoot with the Noctilux today. These are crops/ resized from the drug store scans of the Kodak Portra 160NC. I brought the Drugstore jpegs into Lightroom and fine tuned the exposure from there and also created the resized images seen below from Lightroom. These first two were shot at f1. The last one, with my son on a swing was shot at f1.4. To show how sharp the Noctilux is in the center, even wide open, there is a crop of the dog's tougue in the second picture. garyp Posted October 9, 2006 Share #4 Posted October 9, 2006 Good work, Robert. You certainly know how to nail the focus. The Portra and Nocti combo seems to work well together also. GaryP
skass Posted October 9, 2006 Share #5 Posted October 9, 2006 Robert, That first shot is great! I love the expression, and the background. Steve
Overgaard Posted October 9, 2006 Share #6 Posted October 9, 2006 I like no 3 for the thoughful expression. It's just gerat, besides the technially difficulties you had to overcome on this one.

It's just gerat, besides the technially difficulties you had to overcome on this one. I actually make two attempts to get that shot. Here is my second attempt. Sometimes you just get it right the first time. Nobody is perfect when shooting at f1.4, not even an AF camera. Welcome, dear visitor! robsteve Posted October 9, 2006 Author Share #8 Posted October 9, 2006 I reprocessed it to match the one above. On the one above there was the white object in the background to balance off of. Overgaard Posted October 9, 2006 Share #9 Posted October 9, 2006 "not even an AF camera" I find AF constantly ruining my shots. It's never sharp where I want it whenever it counts. Might be good for brick walls but I don't do that many of those. This selective sharpness is just perfect. It feels like I'm in the same space as the boy and the rest of the world is outside. And of course it has a filmic movement to it as well.
ddp Posted October 10, 2006 Share #10 Posted October 10, 2006 Robert, I have been telling people for a long time that AF is not perfect. Too many times I've had lenses and sensors search on me, even in a single focus mode. Nice work on these...dog shot is pretty cool.
robsteve Posted October 10, 2006 Author Share #11 Posted October 10, 2006 The dog shot was just luck. My son was going to make her roll over for a treat, but he stepped back out of focus when she started to roll . I was lucky to get what I got. I guess when she rolls, he head stays on the same axis
earleygallery Posted October 10, 2006 Share #12 Posted October 10, 2006 I brought the Drugstore jpegs into Lightroom and fine tuned the exposure from there and also created the resized images seen below from Lightroom. Robert, love your shots, especially the first for the bokeh. However, since when did we have 'drugstores' in the UK?
ponsoldt Posted October 11, 2006 Share #13 Posted October 11, 2006 I love the first shot. Unfortuneately, you are making me want to buy one. I have been resisting. Bill

robsteve Posted October 12, 2006 Author Share #15 Posted October 12, 2006 I posted this in another thread, but I thought I would add it here. I took this picture the day after the ones posted above. It was shot wide open with the Noctilux and Portra 160NC film. It is the full width of the frame, just a bit cropped off the top for an 8x10 print. I made the print today and it is now framed in on the wall in our family room. Welcome, dear visitor! robsteve Posted October 12, 2006 Author Share #18 Posted October 12, 2006 Ooops - apologies, just read in another thread you are in America (blushes). For some reason I thought you were in the UK. I'll get my coat....... I am actually a Canadian, like the Noctilux. I realize the the British definition of American is a resident of North America. When I travel in Europe sometimes when I tell people I am from Canada, they say "Oh, your are an American" . I am pretty sure this doesn't come form a lack of Geography knowledge, but that they use the British definition of America, meaning the continent, not the country. I just realized this site doesn't show where the members are from. Can be a bit confusing that way. Did the old forum show our country?
