I dont have a Nikon D3 but does the 1ds3 match it in terms of low noise at high iso?

Or are you saying that if you downsize its images to 12mp it does?

Jeff

The D700 review should be up later today. If one matches D700 and 1Ds3 files (both at 12 MP pixel dimensions), I actually prefer the Canon at ISO 3200. Details at 11...

Cheers,

Sean

Hi Chris,

I can't even give a date right now as to when I might be able to discuss any potential changes/additions to Leica's offerings. As soon as I can make comments, I certainly will.

Cheers,

Sean

Sean - thanks. I'm sure we'll all be keeping our ears to the ground ...

Best for all your endevours.

As far as I remember the newest Nikon are hands down much better at high ISO then any other camera ever built, including the newest Canons.

It got some Canon shooters switching brands.

Check out the upcoming comparisons. The D700 is very good but not superior in the ways that I've been reading. Naturally, I've been looking at converted RAW files with no noise reduction applied.

Cheers,

Sean

Sean, are you shooting Nikon these days, I apologize as I realize this is hardly relevant to the topic at hand but your above comment must come from some significant experience of which I am interested, although I don't own Canon equipment as good as it is.

Cheers to you. Terry.

Hi Terry,

I'm still primarily shooting with the M8 but I'm testing a D700 and a 1Ds3. If Canon's successor to the 5D is not weather sealed, Melissa and I will likely switch to Nikon bodies for DSLR work.

Cheers,

Sean

I have been in contact with Solms service today to ask if I could leave my M8 with them at Photokina or on my way past Solms on the 26th of this month, for the sapphire glass and the electronic upgrade (mine is a very early M8 - #302). The answer was no - the upgrade has to be booked through your local dealer after the end of September. So, it looks as if it is still going ahead. It is just not very convenient for me and a bit customer unresponsive that I cannot leave it in Solms.

I think Leica is dropping you a hint that you should wait to see what the new camera costs before having the old one upgraded.

That's unfortunate, so it looks as if they won't allow you to do this for the upgrades.

There's an event I'm photographing at again in November and in the past the clunk whirrrr of the M8 has proven to be an embarrassment. I was hoping to get the shutter upgrade in time. I'll have to resort to the Epson RD-1 but the only backup I'll have will be an M8.

From a purely selfish point of view, I sincerely hope that alll these perfectly good M8s going back merely for an upgrade, do not impact on the servicing of my R8, which actually NEEDS fixing...

I would be extremely annoyed if M upgrades were to be given priority over proper service items.

Andy,

I am afraid my M8 does need fixing as well. It is back to its old trick of not closing the shutter after a sensor clean, unless I have my #2 battery in there, straight off the charger. I will do my usual repair job of Servisol on the battery contacts, leaving the battery out for a few days to reset everything and then reloading the firmware, in the hope that it keeps going until it has its holiday in Solms. My wife and I are doing a major trip to the far east early in the new year and I definitely want the M8 in apple pie order for that.

Sorry, I didn't necessarily mean your M8 personally ;)

It's the principle of the flood of "un-necessary" upgrades that will descend on Solms come the 20th September, pushing out other cameras that actually need fixing because they don't work at all...

I heard from someone heard Christian @ Leica-USA say that they (USA) were hiring one (or maybe it was two) techs to do nothing but upgrades. Hopefully Solms has a similar plan in mind.

Well, I'm a bit underwhelmed and a bit disappointed by this "M8.2" news, but I guess it's believable enough as an evolutionary step.

I really do want a full-frame sensor M. I don't believe it's "not possible" any more...or the {ahem} previous rumours wouldn't have even started.

But what I want to know is this:

  • will the M8.2 have the green streak artifact that the M8 has? It shouldn't.
  • will the M8.2 be more stable at low power levels? I should never have to pull the battery to get the camera to respond
  • will the M8.2 improve the buffer speed and size and overall responsiveness? I can't believe, honestly, that Leica could not make the camera much more responsive with 2 years of technical changes under their belt...

If Leica addresses these issues, I'll sell the M8 (or upgrade it) tomorrow and buy two M8.2s... And one more stop of latitude would work for me. I'd really like to be able to use ISO 1250 under more circumstances (meaning there should be a useful ISO 5000).

FWIW, on the Canon - Nikon thing, I'm like Sean: I'm waiting to see what the next "5d" looks like but the d700 / d3 is calling my name :)

You make some good points. I don't want to use the name of a certain Disney cartoon rodent in reference to the M8.2 improvements, but when it all boils down, from an imaging standpoint, it's the same camera. I sold a 30D (cost=$1299) for $800 for a 40D (cost=$1299), i.e. net $500 for 2 more MP and a few cool but nonessential features, but selling my M8 (cost=$5500) for $3000 (the most it would likely fetch after the 8.2 announcement) and buying an M8.2 for even $5500, i.e. net $2500? I think it would really have to have some serious picture-making improvement for me to do that. To each his own of course.

I see that the specs for the M8.2 describe compatibility with "Memory medium: SD and SDHC cards up to 32 GByte".

Does this mean that there will likely be a firmware upgrade also for the M8 - or do you think this will be exclusively for the M8.2 ?

Already answered several pages before your post. Check tech specs. M8 and M8.2 get SDHC. Just as Leica has said from day one, it's firmware.

According to the initial announcement, upgrades in Solms will not be done by repair department but on the camera assembly line. That may have changed, but I haven't seen anything to indicate that's the case.

Implication is that repairs won't be slowed by the upgrade process.

Perhaps this one is better? :D

Sdai,

Not quite sure what we are supposed to be seeing. I don't see any new cameras on this site that are not announced/previewed on DPReview - am I missing something?

You are not missing anything, Wilson. The new camera is the silhouette in the intro flash. By the time you see the full moon, you'll know what it is.
