adan Posted September 26, 2006 Share #21 Posted September 26, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) So if the Sigma DP1 has a fixed "28mm" lens - how come it has buttons on the back marked "W" and "T" to zoom a non-existent zoom? Inquiring minds want to know!
Advertisement Posted September 26, 2006 Posted September 26, 2006 Hi adan, Take a look here Sigma DP1. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Guest stnami Posted September 26, 2006 Share #22 Posted September 26, 2006 Rob you are sadly mistaken if it is to be used for taking photos with. It is a goddam 18th letter of the Greek alphabet and is now a golfing term and meaning the last place before drinks Drink more P____ W is for wiskey and the T is for well I'll be buggered, dunno

albertwang Posted September 26, 2006 Share #26 Posted September 26, 2006 Supposedly the W and T buttons are for the digital zoom on the camera!
789456 Posted September 26, 2006 Share #27 Posted September 26, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) A lot of us want Leica to compete in this market. We are making our voices heard. +1 Leicaman at Solms can choose : a Digital minilux or... a competitor .
simon_hughes Posted September 26, 2006 Share #28 Posted September 26, 2006 Even though it is interesting, it certainly looks cobbled together. Could it be they are using the (standard) W/T controls simply for the zoom function within playback of an image?
albertwang Posted September 26, 2006 Share #29 Posted September 26, 2006 Yes, that digital zoom works on the image playback. I hope that you can magnify 16X on the image. For those who forgot the 28-70mm R zoom was created with Sigma partnership. So Leica and Sigma have a history together. And yes, I own that lens too! bill Posted September 26, 2006 Share #30 Posted September 26, 2006 I really don't understand the excitement here. This is NOT a digital CM/Minilux substitute by any stretch of the fevered imagination. f4??? 28mm??? Come on! Does anyone remember the early episodes of Red Dwarf? The ones where Cat kept going on about "shiny things" and how much he wanted them? Just because it's new and shiny doesn't mean it's desirable, although to some people that does seem to be the primary criterion for acquisition... For those, like me, who do want a real digital CM, instead of wasting your money on this, spend it on a stamp and send a considered letter to Solms politely setting out what you would like to see and why. Regards, Bill
simon_hughes Posted September 26, 2006 Share #31 Posted September 26, 2006 Bill, While I agree that this is NOT a digital CM, I don't think it's likely we'll ever see one any time soon. Although Leica has finally delivered (or is about to) on the digital M, they seem quite content to simply rebadge anything other than the M8 and DMR. At this point, and for the foreseeable future, they are going to be consumed with making back their investment on the M, hence the latest crop of Panaleicas. THAT is why we poor souls latch onto cameras like the Ricoh and the Sigma (or even the D-LUX 2/3) as a next-best-thing to the elusive digital CM. Cheers, Simon
J Mitchum Posted September 26, 2006 Author Share #32 Posted September 26, 2006 We need to start our own camera company. Who's with me?
J Mitchum Posted September 26, 2006 Author Share #33 Posted September 26, 2006 Why do they all look the same. Probably use all the same bits anyway. None of them are substatntially different enough to be any better than the other in practical use. Its all just pick a brand use it for a bit get rid of it next year. The difference here is the Sigma DP1 is the first compact to use an APS sized sensor. This is significant as the reason why all pocketable digitals to date have had terrible image quality is due to the use of tiny sensors. It shows it is possible and hopefully will force other manufacturers (are you listening Leica?) to follow suit.
albertwang Posted September 26, 2006 Share #34 Posted September 26, 2006 Yes, APS sensor are going to be rather impressive. Plus no pixel stuffing here either.
reddawn Posted September 26, 2006 Share #35 Posted September 26, 2006 Hi this may not be a digital CM, but i agree with an earlier reply that says there might not be a digital CM that is truly from Leica itself (like the digital M) for a long time to come...... And yes this little Sigma has a full APS-C size sensor (or close to it - the crop factor is 1.7x) in it, a foveon sensor no less. In theory at least, the image quality is likely to be far better with less high ISO noise. In theory. (sd10 comes to mind, but let's hope Sigma learnt some lessons from that!) wim Posted September 26, 2006 Share #36 Posted September 26, 2006 Compact? If that - as stated on the Sigma website - is a 2.5 inch lcd, the DP1 can hardly be compact.
earleygallery Posted September 26, 2006 Share #37 Posted September 26, 2006 No optical VF and 28mm is a tad too wide for one lens - pity it could've been very interesting.
peterb Posted September 26, 2006 Share #38 Posted September 26, 2006 Wim, The LCD on the Ricoh GR D is 2.5" and that camera's about as compact as you'd want. And Earlygallery, the fact that the lens is a 28mm equiv. doesn't bother me all that much, The Ricoh GR D had that and using it was like having an M with a 28mm lens. Perfect for street stuff. And if you can attach a third party 28mm finder like Voigtlander's then you could have a really neat picture taker. My biggest disappointment is that the lens speed of this lens is f4. Ricoh got away with it because their sensor is so small. So I guess going with an f4 was an executive decision that was made as result of putting an APS sized sensor inside a compact body. It probably would have been too difficult and costly to make the lens any faster. Even if it would have been one honey of a compact. P
lct Posted September 27, 2006 Share #39 Posted September 27, 2006 What's the point of getting 14Mpix to get blurred images for lack of viewfinder? Makes me think of my daughter. She went to Argentina on vacation and i lent her a decent digicam of mine, with a decent VF i mean (Sony DSC-V1). Back home, a lot of her photos were motion blurred. When i asked why she answered she did not use the VF because 'nobody did like this'.
albertwang Posted September 27, 2006 Share #40 Posted September 27, 2006 There's something called bump up the ISO to reduce camera shake. I would hope that average p and s guys figure that out... geewhiz. This looks awesome. I like the simplicity and it is the closest to a Minilux Digi as we will get.
