Krakow - One Challenge 11 October 2008 details

Yes, I know that the school holidays have only just started, but it's that time of year again, folks. Many have already expressed an interest - or even booked flights etc - but for those that haven't, here are the details.

First, a quick resumé for those who are new to the idea:-

The "One Challenge", an idea started by Bill Palmer (bill) back in 2004, has become an annual event in the Leica User Forum European Calendar. So far, we have been to London, Amsterdam, Paris, Berlin and this year, the venue will be Krakow, Poland. It is really an excuse for a bit of a social gathering amongst members and their spouses (sometimes!), but with a purpose. In previous years, some entrants were also able to meet in the evening for a meal and a glass or two, and, if possible, we would like to organise something similar this year. A "house menu" of around €30 - €40 has been mooted, and subject to numbers, we will try to organise something suitable.

Many thanks go to James Earley for his sterling work on a previous trip to Krakow and his contacts at the meeting venue, and to Steve Unsworth for his suggestions.

The meeting venue is Bunkier Sztuki, an arts centre in the middle of the old city, and we propose to meet slightly earlier than usual at 11:00 am. PLEASE NOTE SLIGHT CHANGE OF TIME

The rules for the One Challenge have been deliberately kept simple.

People who take up the One Challenge have two hours, after lunch and paying an entry fee of €10, to shoot one roll of film (or 36 digital shots, on a trust basis), using only one lens and one camera body. If 36 shots haven't been taken in the two hours, then shooting for the One Challenge must stop. One shot, the best of the 36, is then submitted to the organiser (send them to me again!) who will then post the entries anonymously for voting on by the whole membership of the Forum.

The shot with the most votes will win the entry fee.

As last year, it is intended that the short list for NEXT year's Challenge be decided by a popular vote, which will be placed as a poll here. So, if anyone has any suggestions for 2009, please make them known!

The full rules are here: Krakow Terms and Conditions.pdf

So, hands up who fancies a trip to Krakow? EVERYONE IS WELCOME!

Just to add, that there's no scale on the map, but the cafe is only a couple of minutes walk from the main square - that's the grey blob in the middle of the map. You can't really miss the main square, it's big. I haven't been to the cafe before, but it looks as if it's an interesting place to meet.

I think it's safe to say that all the previous events have been successes, and enjoyed by everyone who has taken part. As competitions go it isn't very competitive - or at least my entries haven't been - it's as much about meeting people from the forum and putting fces to names as it is taking photographs.

Here's to meeting everyone again and look forward to seeing the new faces.

Actually their map is a little off, the gallery/cafe faces out onto the main (yellow) road, but it's a large building so not difficult to find. As Steve says its literally a few minutes walk from the main square in the Old Town.

Thanks for the update; I have booked transport and accommodation. Good idea to arrange for an earlier meeting time: the number of participants seem to increase with each challenge. Looking forward to see old - and new - faces!

Great selection. Krakow is a wonderful place to visit with tons of shooting opportunities -- and many of them within easy walking distance. I wouldn't suggest even one place to shoot since either research or discovery (the method is up to you) is a good part of the fun.

I envy those who can make the trip.:)

Can anyone in the know give details of public transport links between the airport and the city centre - we don't really want to take a taxi of we can avoid it.

John, there's a bus link, but I'm not sure where the bus goes to, or exactly where my hotel is for that matter

I think I'm on the same flight - Friday from Liverpool - I'd be more than happy to share a taxi with you and your wife. We're probably staying at different hotels, but from memory it shouldn't cost much more than £5 a head.

John, if you google your hotel you will prbably find it has fairly sussinct directions on how to get to it from both the airport and the rail station.

I have yet to book my Krakow accommodation (been busy checking Morocco :D ) but if you have trouble, post another message here or PM me. I am about to return to Krak accom and I remember there was a good spread of maps & directions floating on the local sites.

Edit: I seem to remember googling the airport itself which has precise directions on where to walk from the terminal to find the local commuter bus service.

Thanks everyone - it looks as if it will be straightforward. Steve, we are on the 13.15 easyjet flight from Liverpool on the Friday. If that is indeed your flight, then sharing a taxi might well be an excellent idea.

Buses are right outside the terminal (which is pretty small anyway). A taxi into town isn't very expensive however, can't remember exactly what I paid last time but I'm sure it was less than £20. The bus is probably about a quid though, if you can spare the time.

The camera and lens for the day has already been chosen, the ISO depends on how good, or bad, the light is.

So how many different speed films will you be carrying Steve? :D :D :D

Anyone up (potentially) for the Fri evening meal somewhere, or are we saving ourselves for the morrow?;)

I have a special camera that allows me to change the ISO. I don't suppose it'll catch on.

Not sure if I can commit to a Friday meal, I arrive late Friday afternoon and there's always the possibility the plane will be delayed.

If anyone wants to meet up for a beer on Friday evening we could always arrange a meeting point and time. If people don't make it then it's not as bad as missing a meal. There's a small church that stands by itself on the southern part of the main square, we could meet outside there and then go for a drink.

The beer idea sounds fine. My timing means I only have Friday afternoon/early-evening to have a look round Krakow so I'll be in the mood for a beer at least; eating may also be possible on an informal arrangement basis. Meeting point noted.

Steve, that must be an 'amazing' camera, but your'e right. I don't reckon it will catch. You can bet there won't be any others like it!;)

Now what's all this 'smike 'n mirrors' stuff about the "south" side of the square? Are you trying to confuse me just because I come from t'other hemisphere? Methinks I will definitely bring a compass with me, even if it's only to find my way out of Fez (the following week).

Erl, just stand on your head and everything will make sense.

Ignore the directions, the square is huge, but there's only one small church on it, next to a large market hall.

There's a photo and article about it here...

You can see how big the main square is.

My plane lands at 23:35 on Friday: I guess that would be a bit late, even for those I have seen in action:), for the beer.

BTW, I am in the ESTER hotel, in Szeroka st. and I'll fly back to France on the 12th at 11:35 so if there is an evening meal scheduled on the 11th, I am game if you'll have me.
